I have linux mint installed on a surface pro two and linux debian inst installed on virtual box. Forgive me for this next statement for it may be inaccurate. I installed chromium browser on both machines. One both i used what i will call the apt package handler. I am not sure if apt is a package handler. on one machine i had to use the name chromium-browser and on the other just chromium. I dont understand if i used apt to do this why the two different names. Arent this both debian based versions? Thanks for your help in advance.

Because they are different distros - they have their own software repositories. Sometimes package names differ slightly between them.

Debian is Debian - used as a base for a lot of distros.
And Mint is derived from Ubuntu, which in turn, is derived from Debian.
They all use the same package management systems, apt, aptitude, synaptic with the .deb package format etc. But they each have their own software repositories.
