Hello. I have never tried to use Linux before. But I thought I’d try it on an old laptop I have. I have looked and can not find how to download and which version I would need.
I am hoping for some help.
Here is some information about the laptop
Dell Latitude 2129
Windows 10 Pro
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N55 @1.66GHz 1.67GHz
Installed RAM 2.00GB
System type 64 bit operating system x64 based processor.
I would like a version (any) that will run on this computer. I don’t want to keep windows on it. I was hoping to find a version that I could download on to a USB and do an fresh install.
I am not that knowledgeable with computers but can usually figure some stuff out.Installing Linux I am finding difficult. I hope someone here can help.
Thank you!!

i good test for hardware compatibility is to boot a Linux OS from a usb stick. you can try Mint xfce https://linuxmint.com/download.php 3rd in list.

you can use Winsows version of ventoy https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html

to format a usb stick say 4gig or more. After format drag and drop the Linux file onto usb. Then from a cold boot hit appropraite key f8 , f2 etc to choose to boot from usb. At spash choose "try" Mint not install

In the words of Commander Riker, welcome aboard

One thing you should be aware of is Linux isn't just one operating system, but a series of them instead. Many of them function differently than others, and some are easier to use than others. I've been using Mint for the last several years, and despite having to unlearn many of the things I grew accustomed to on Windows, its very user-friendly. I'd recommend running it in VirtualBox so you can play around with it in order to learn how to use it. linuxmint.com

Just a heads up, if you don't want to deal with moderators who censor a lot, don't use the official Mint forum (that's why I left). Even though I'm relatively-new to this forum, it seems a lot more laid back.

I dowloaded Mint xfce on a usb

the download should have given you an .iso file in the downloads directory. First step verify the download. The iso file has everything you need to get a distro running live BUT you can't just place that onto a usb. Ventoy is one approach https://rufus.ie/ is another "appropriate" way to put .iso onto usb.

Can you elaborate on your process a bit for us a bit ; did you manage format of usb by ventoy or ...

while we wait for OP ...no sci fi fan but i'm quite selective these days . re-watched original blade runner - waiting for 2nd in series to turn up on netflix .

Ok sorry like I said I’m new so be patient with me.
I downloaded ventoy and unzipped it. So now what do I leave that on the USB stick when I boot from the USB?

There is no exe file extension only Ventoy2Disk.sh which is SH Flie

Ok used Rufus and figured out that part. I think it’s loading now. Can I delete Windows and just use Linux Mint?

sorry missed that post. Suggest you play with Mint live and lets look a bit deeper (for me tomorrw) , before you wipe Windows
