I have two laptops running Linux Mint. One doesn't have an ethernet socket. What is the easiest way to connect these so that I can copy files from one to the other? I don't have an Internet connection so the two would have to speak directly over wifi.

We used to use a 'crossover' cable to do that.

I'd just find a cheap router, even an ISP's router, and use that as my LAN router.

Heck, you might even know someone who has an old ISP MODEM/router kicking around. That should work just fine at routing your home network.

Isn't it possible to use the "Create new WiFi Network" option in the networking menu on the system panel?

Why dont you just put your files from lap top A on a external hard drive and transfer them to Lap top B. a little time comsuming but zero internent connection.

It might be, but that'd depend on the card supporting it and then you'd have to configure some sort of server to handle things like NAT and DNS.

I would also say...External HDD/SSD or a Flash Drive.
