I have dabbled with Linux for quite a while but I really don't know much at all.

My interest is in Linux servers and while I can use the command line I get some reassurance from a GUI, particularly a file explorer - just to get a graphical view of folders contents (and permissions) ideally a dual pane file explorer.

I know I can fairly simply install a GUI desktop but that seems quite significant, would it be simpler to install a window manager and a file explorer (IceWM/Dolphin?)?

Is there a simpler way?

Hello @SandLake,
Welcome to the Linux.org forum.
I use Midnight commander - it's not a gui but is very good file manager.
for a gui manager I would recommend pcmanfm. Which is very light weight and should work with any DE /WM that uses gtk libs.
Good Luck.

Midnight Commander is my favourite too, sometimes my only one, even with a GUI. ;)

(If you want something similar for a GUI, emelfm is quite a good choice.)
