openSUSE desktop install help

Mate, yer legend, you'll get on fine with Linux :p

Good taste in music, too :D Love the Emmanuel brothers, makes me wish I played a better air guitar.

Summer storm coming here, live 3,000 feet up & they kick arse, then thy roll down the range to the big smoke and kick more. Had to batten down the hatches.

I'm in Artful Aardvark GNOME now, didn't realise inxi was not installed by default there.

Follow the command and put it on, and you can save the config for your own purposes and for lettings others know what you have.

Mine is in the Spoiler

There are other more verbose options but it's handy as a summary of your State of The Nation?

When you type in sudo password, there is no movement (security).

Before I love you and leave you:

1st thing to do after a new install, at Terminal

Code:
sudo ufw enable

It will enable the Uncomplicated Fire Wall, which will be activated in real time, and a script runs each bootup/reboot to repeat that. Between UFW and a firewall at your router, you are 3/4 bulletproof with Linux, and may not even need AV software.

Cheers, gotta go & run 280 updates elsewhere. I run 60 - 70 Linux typically ... a Linux Father's work is never done :(

Thanks, Wizard. Not sure what that all means, but I'll figure it out.
This it the kind of stuff I miss from early Windows.
Going to be fun.
Hold on to your hat and don't get blown away.

Charlie.

Got firewall enabled.

Got inxi.

Firewall - good :D

inxi - not so good :( but if you have privacy concerns, I do not think that is an issue here, but your call.

For me:

inxi gives

CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7-4700MQ (-HT-MCP-) speed/max~1594/3400 MHz Kernel~4.10.0-42-generic x86_64 Up~39 min Mem~1871.6/7905.3MB HDD~1000.2GB(1.2% used) Procs~255 Client~Shell inxi~2.2.35

inxi -c 5 gives

CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7-4700MQ (-HT-MCP-) speed/max~1594/3400 MHz Kernel~4.10.0-42-generic x86_64 Up~39 min Mem~1871.6/7905.3MB HDD~1000.2GB(1.2% used) Procs~255 Client~Shell inxi~2.2.35

... exactly the same.

But inxi -Fxs ... gives as you saw in my Spoiler, and it is the one you should form a text file from and keep as a reference.

If someone is asking you for your config in order to help, give them that, it is a good start.

Even though it tells us that you may be 64-bit, in "flags" for example, where mine says

flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx)

"lm" means "long mode" which is 64-bit. Hope you understand.

Cheers

Wizard out for my night.

Yes, understood. When I did inxi -Fxs Got the detailed version, and saved that in Docs. Then I found the -c5 (Readers Digest version) and posted that.

From what I see, everything looks O.K. except cpu fan speed. Don't know why that isn't showing.

My next concern is Internet Security.
I see some people use it and some don't.
Is it only needed if you are running ms or google products? Or is it for anyone who enters any personal info on line? Or should EVERYone be using it?

Comodo seems to be popular.

Charlie

Morning Charlie, I am nearly human (for a wizard), on my 2nd coffee.

"Fan Speeds (in rpm): cpu: N/A" on mine, as well. A Toshiba Satellite lappie, curious, hadn't noticed.

Security is really a personal choice, of what makes you feel comfortable.

I'll just switch over to your environment and be back.

(Ages later) back.

Many if not most Linux, including yours, have available in the Repositories Clam Antivirus known as Clam AV. It also has a graphical front end called Clam TK available.

Clam gets mixed reviews, sometimes being reported as providing a number of false positives, and also missing some threats, but that is anecdotal not evidentiary, on my part.

You can get to SPM (Synaptic Package Manager) via your "show applications" (9 dots in a square), and search under "clam" or "antivirus". Check the box or right-click to mark for install then click apply. It may well include all options, not sure.

Or at Terminal

Code:
sudo apt-get install clamav

and to update signatures anytime

sudo fresh-clam

I believe that is still current.

There is also Comodo as you have noted, and Sophos also have a free Linux AV.

I provide links here at @Yara 's thread https://www.linux.org/threads/is-li...-i-protect-my-pc-from-virus.15212/#post-48858

I am not Staff but your question here I think is appropriate here, within the scope of your subject title.

If you want to go into more detail on AV (& attract more responses), I would start up a new thread titled aptly.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Thanks Wizard.
I think while I'm researching it, I'll get "Chkrootkit" and "Rkhunter" to have on hand.
Going to be learning my new OS, so I shouldn't be much more than my "common sense?" I'm pretty sure I have enough of that to keep me out of trouble.

Mate those two are well-known and well-regarded. Beyond my scope of reference, but not that of some others here.

Enjoy

Hi all
First off; Great forum people, I have read a lot of good info here. See lots of people-helping-people. Always great to find that. Makes the world turn much smoother.

I have been building and servicing computers since the late 1990's. Never learned code, shame on me, I was always building bigger, faster, better; tweaking, modding, refurb, de-bug. Mainly working for free or a good meal.
Last 9 years at my job as head quality tech, I taught employees how to use computers and do data entry in Office (and other proprietary programs. And assisted the IT guy in servicing and setting up computers. We had over 100 computers in our plant.

Getting a little long winded, hope you don't mind.

My system: ASUS mobo. Sabertooth 990FX rev.1 - 8 core AMD FX CPU - Radeon HD6850 GPU x2 in Cross Fire - 16GB Hynix Ram - 500GB Sammy 850 EVO SSD with Win 10 - 1TB platter with Win 7 - 1 TB platter plus 3 ea. 500GB platters for storage - 128 GB SSD (blank) for Linux.

I have just burned openSUSE Leap .iso to a 16GB thumb drive using "Rufus" 2.18
I was planning to run it off the thumb drive to see how I liked it.
Note: I have an old 32bit computer that I installed SUSE on years ago to try it out. It wouldn't support my hardware or software and I soon lost interest in it, then soon after built my current computer with Win 7.

ANYWAY;
When I boot to the USB, SUSE comes up, but it looks like it wants to install to a hard drive.
I booted to it two more times, thinking it should just "run", but it wants to install. So I just back out of it, and here I am.
Have I done something wrong, or am I missing a step or two?

If ALL I can do from here is to install it, I have a 128GB SSD for that.
I have read that trying to run SUSEfrom a thumb drive is way to slow, and that I should install it.

So that brings up the next question.
Can I install to my SSD that is plugged into a docking port, plugged into an external SATA. (I'm running out of ports on the motherboard) ;-)

Thanks, in advance, for your help
Charlie
Nice hardware suite, mate! That setup should scream with whatever you use it for. What are you using for monitors (I am assuming multiple monitors here)? Oh, and welcome to the group!:D

Happy Trails,:)

I don't know, mate, trouble seems to find me wherever I hide!:D:p For instance, I got a call today to reboot a server. When I went into the server room, it seemed a bit warm. The ambient temp was a balmy 104.4F, vice the usual (I will not say Normal, because my buddy Atanare will get me for it) 65F. I wonder why we had problems:confused:. It seems that a power hit during the blizzard we had yesterday took out the ac, and it did not come back on. Dagnabit!! Anyway, I spent the day alternating between stomping alligators, and draining the swamp, and finally got things running on an even keel.o_O Got a few gator bites along the way.:D

Happy Trails,
Paul
