This raises a "red flag" for me. It really depends on your expectations and requirements. I have seen many people become disenchanted and quite frustrated with their "Black Friday" super cheap laptop.

Personally, I would look for a machine with an Intel Core i5 or better processor (AMD is cheaper but runs hot in laptops), 8 Gig or more of DDR4 or better RAM memory, a SSD hard drive if possible. This would be more of a "mid-range" rather than "cheap" laptop.

Writing code in an IDE or even a text processor will not require much computing power. But if you ever wanted to do any more demanding tasks such as compiling code then you will be much more satisfied with more "horsepower".

These are the recommended system requirements for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS:
2 GHz dual core processor or better
4 GB system memory
25 GB of free hard drive space
Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
Internet access is helpful

I would consider the above the "minimum" system requirements.

i bought a HP Stream 14 Inch A4 4GB 64GB they are selling for circa 229 pounds; it had windows 10 on it i wiped everything and put slackware(64 bit current) -does everything for me including php web dev via apache etc . via a SD card slot i have extra 15 gig

have a look at my specs its a html file,so open with a browser

laptopcloseout.com has refurbished i3, and i5 systems for well under USD $500, and most come with 8 GB RAM.

It might be useful to get model names and model numbers from that site, then Google how well Linux runs on <whatever model>

I've never purchased from the site (though we may be buying wife a system this week), but it may be worth a look around.

Thanks everyone, maybe i m going on this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Notebook, Display 15,6" Full HD, Processore Intel Core i5--8265U, 256GB SSD+16GB Optane, 8GB RAM,Scheda Grafica NVIDIA GeForce MX110 2GB GDDR5, Windows 10, Black
which i found on Amazon Italy (i m from Italy and i can't buy on laptopscloseout)

I think Windows10 needs to have at least 30gig so there is room for both Linux and Windows so are you going for dual boot ?

Those specs look very good.
