Forget the Software Updater just now. Open a Terminal and issue these commands one-at-a-time:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Also, to get the plug in:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Does Chromium start now? Does it start if you input to the Terminal:
chromium-browser

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
libupstart1
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

What does this mean? Why can it not lock administration directory and ask if I am root?

Actually, I can on Firefox but not Chromium.......

If you have Trusty, you can just run sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree.
