The other day I downloaded Lubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat...I tried Etcher and Ventoy but it wouldn't boot. I got no bootable file for UEFI and missing partition table.

Today I downloaded Lubuntu 22.04.4 Desktop Jammy Jellyfish...burnt it to a Flash Drive with Etcher with no problems but when I tried to boot...I got...error invalid magic number and error missing partition table. So who's at fault here...is it Etcher...Me or Lubuntu. ?

So I ran a few tests with 4 other ISOs...Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.3...Peppermint...Kubuntu and MX Linux...

All were burnt to a Flash Drive with Etcher and all were copied in to Ventoy...one at a time. All booted normally without problems and in UEFI too.
When we download an ISO and get problems especially like these...it's not up to us to fix them...hopefully Lubuntu will fix these issues or just try another Distro.

Of course I have no intention of changing from Mint Cinnamon as it's the best but once in a while I'll try another Distro just out of curiosity. I use to install a Distro in Virtualbox but it's easier to use Ventoy or a Flash Drive now.

Interesting.

Where did you download then from Bob, and did you check the checksums?

Or, download via torrent and that should negate the checking.

Last time I had a failed boot with Ventoy was because I had pulled out my usb drive out before the copy finished because the second time I copied it I did check and it booted fine. Don't know if it's the same for you but I know of myself I can be a bit impatient at times and forget to check if the file was actually successfully copied.

I downloaded it from here...https://lubuntu.me/ tried to install in Virtualbox and got message saying...critical error and that was it.

Tried that but no seeds...got nowhere.
With Ventoy...I always wait at least 5 minutes after copy and paste or dragging the ISO in, and always safely eject the Flash Drive.

Unfortunate to hear that lubuntu failed to work bob466. Frustrating :-(. Nevertheless, I can report that lubuntu worked flawlessly using the process described here:

And thanks for starting this thread to avoid hijacking the other one :)

The successful experience here would suggest that there is no problem with the lubuntu iso file. If it works, (as it has here, booting up into a common desktop machine), then in normal circumstances that would relieve lubuntu devs from dealing with it. I guess they'd likely only respond to reliable bug reports with reproducible findings of multiple failures or some observable coding errors.

I can't say why you have experienced the problem in such a peculiar situation where other distros have no problem. If the issue is not with the lubuntu iso file, then I guess it's most likely somewhere in the software that you have used, and/or in the machine and/or the media, and/or in the configurations that have been set. That is whole lot of "stuff" to test out, and it's not something that I would fancy doing. I guess most "ordinary" desktop users who normally interact with GUIs wouldn't wish to do that either.

In the first instance following the experience you described, I would make sure that everything is upgraded to the latest versions, and then try again. That would include the ventoy installation as well.

Try running fdisk on the ISO file to see if it sees a partition table.

I'll go out on a limb.....I think it is ...Ubuntu itself.

Time will tell

After download about 3 dozen .ISOs i found that using 'YUMi-exFAT' on my new Dull NoteBook allowed proper evaluation of Lite 7.0, LMDE 6 Faye, MX 23.3 Libretto and Sparky 8 Seven-Sisters. Alma 9.4 Seafoam Ocelot completely installed too but its desktop feels extremely irritating to me while XUbuntu Noble 24.04 LTS wasn't too satisfying because of some partial touchpad support (hard clics only). Manjaro 24 could have been another option except its font size caused an issue with the launcher menu since i wanted the tablet to be useful as a portable iP-TV, eventually also for playing vintage games...

'YUMi-exFAT' is Ventoy-based, intended for uEFI.

Thanks for sharing your solution. Well done!!

I am stupid because if 4 other ISOs boot and one doesn't...it's a bad ISO and that's exactly what is was. You only get two ISOs to choose from and both had problems.

Today I downloader Lubuntu jellyfish again exactly the same way and used the same Ventoy Flash Drive...Etcher and burnt it to the same Flash Drive on the same UEFI computer from the same website.

This fresh ISO booted from Ventoy and Etcher just fine...

This sometimes occurs if you have not disabled Secure boot.
Ditto-
Checking the integrity of the .iso is one of the first things I do.

FWIW, it's been my experience that any time I've gotten the error:

Code:
invalid or bad magic number
You'll have to boot the kernel first

It's related to the boot files (vmlinuz-kernel) being corrupt and the Live USB wouldn't boot the Linux image.
Or secure boot not being disabled:-

@bob466 Where can I find those cool emojis that you use?

Secure boot on this Motherboard (Tower) was disabled when installed over a year ago...checksum said ISOs were ok. I don't place much faith in checksum. What I like about Etcher is...if you have a bad ISO as in my case...Etcher won't burn it.

Why ISOs wouldn't boot one day and did after downloading one the next day is a mystery...but it's not up to the user to work out what's wrong or try to fix it...just try another Distro.

It's not the first time I've had problems with an ISO...when Mint Cinnamon 21.1 first came out I installed it 3 mths after being declared stable. The first thing I noticed was two folders were missing from the Home Folder...then 4 to 5 days later I couldn't connect to the internet.

Yet my spare SSD which was running Mint Cinnamon 19.1 at the time...had internet. Linux Mint has heaps of mirrors...so I downloaded the ISO from a different mirror...problem solved.
