Hi, I'm new to Linux. My friend told me this was a good place to ask questions. I've looked into this issue a lot and I can't figure it out.
After some trouble, I successfully installed, ran, and regularly used Quod Libet on my 10+yr old Thinkpad X250. It finally worked once I did a system update on January 29th. However, that computer is currently nonfunctional (hoping a CMOS battery replacement will fix that), and I'm trying to install Quod Libet on a T14 Gen 2. Again, my Ubuntu version is 24.04.2.
The process:
  • Followed provided instructions: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lazka/ppa
  • Error/warnings: repo does not have a release file and is disabled by default
  • sudo apt update and upgrade
  • Opening the program does nothing; acts like it's going to open (spinning wheel on taskbar, then nothing)
  • tried some weird stuff (adding Trusted: yes key to config, installed python3 and tried to run quod libet from tarball, cleared cache and stuff) with no luck
  • have restarted computer obviously
  • note: ex falso from same repo works just fine
Does anyone have any ideas for what to do about this? Why did it work on another computer so recently and not anymore? Is this just a matter of the repo not being up to date for Ubuntu? I'm using cmus for now but honestly not interested in alternatives to Quod Libet, so don't worry about that. I've tried them.
I understand there's such a thing as bug reports but I don't even know if this is a problem with Quod Libet or if it's on my end. If nothing else, I just want to understand why this is happening so I can look into it better. Just be nice please...and remember I am very new to all of this!
Thank you :)

G'day asylnn, welcome to Linux.org

Was this download from the ubuntu repository ?

I run Linux Mint 22.1, and I found it in the Linux Software Manager

It took a few minutes to figure it out, scan my Music folder (12GB) and start it playing.

I note that ex falso is installed, along with quod libet in Linux Mint

Quite good.....I like it.

Hi! I followed the instructions on their website which just instructed to use sudo. It seems to show up under "other software" in the software updater, but I don't think I have the same software manager as you on vanilla Ubuntu, and it's definitely not in the snap store. Good to know it's working for someone, though, and glad you like it too!

Nevermind, it's randomly started working. Guess it just needed some time to think about it! (my other response is awaiting mod approval? So in case you don't see that, thank you!)

Definitely not

Although Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu (and they are both based on Debian) that is where the similarity ends. Linux very much goes its own way. Probably why it is as popular as it is, and definitely why I have used it for a decade.

Good luck with Quod.

na! Still a baby
