Hey peeps, Having tried Ubuntu and Linux Mint 17, I was wondering where I should dip my toe next. I'm no expert in Linux, I have been using Windows for 15 years and am amazed how good Linux is.

Any recommendations and the pros and cons of the recommended distros, remembering I'm not tech savvy with Linux like most of you ?

Do you want to stick with Debian "types" like Ubuntu and Linux Mint 17 or do you want to try something else?

I have found LinuxBBQ to great for learning more about Linux as they produce some very basic ISO's with command line and gui apps as well as ISO's which are more Gui orientated.

I used to use Puppy Linux but found the newer releases to be getting progressively buggier, so can't recommend.

Semplice Linux with LXDE added is also my other working system: http://semplice-linux.org/
Has a good kernel which supports a wide range of hardware.

Well I was thinking of Debian actually, what are the differences with the others ?

Big question? Small answer. Mostly boils down to the pre-made packages. Debian and Debian-types use .deb. Redhat and Redhat-types use .rpm. Arch and Arch-types (and Frugalware )use pacman. ...And there is Slackware and Slackware-types.

Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

Debian is a good choice. It is grouped into
Stable (currently Wheezy)
Testing (currently Jessie)
Unstable (always Sid)

If you are going to try Debian then initially go for Stable. (Jessie is frozen and heading towards being stable.) BUT Testing can break and unless you know how to recover (yet?) avoid it.

There are some reasonable suggestions here:
