People who haven't witnessed it, nor seen the destruction first-hand, don't seem to realize exactly how much power Mother Nature has at her disposal. While less focused, a hurricane has as much force as thousands of nuclear bombs. (See: Here.)

The above link also goes into earthquakes and volcanoes. While we don't really do much in the way of causing volcanic activity, fracking has been shown to be correlated with increased earthquakes. (I don't believe they've proven causation, but it takes quite a bit for 'proof'. So, I use the word correlated.)

On a 'positive' note, we humans are pretty adaptable. Our species will likely continue to survive, or even evolve further, until a true extinction-level event comes along - like a giant rock from space. It's not a question of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'.
