Sharing data partition between versions

Thanks, I'll 'prolly' get around to that; but meantime I haven't figured out how to search for specific other peoples' introduction threads - like yours for instance.

Haha, I've been reading your username as KGill; probably a Ken. Suddenly I get it.

Yeah, there's no real organization in Member Introductions. It's a forum, so we've only got so many tools.

Anyhow, you should swing by the Member Introductions and start a thread.
It's OK, I found your intro. I'm only sporadically helpless.

I was going to suggest trying the filter options, as those might let you sort through and see individual's introductions.

Back on topic ... For the record; Mint 20's Evolution has completely screwed up my previous email settings (supposedly restored from backup) besides failing to deliver some messages that still come in on my other (Mint 17) laptop. Mint 20 is getting dumped. It seems backward compatibility is a backward concept.

Do you use Thunderbird?

I have a very complicated configuration, including using PGP to sign and encrypt certain emails, and I merely backup/restore the ~/.thunderbird directory.

Now, sometime around version 78 Mozilla introduced some breaking changes. They then skipped a bunch of versions, for reasons unknown to me. But, if your older Mint was using an older version of Thunderbird, it may have broken stuff.

It took me about an hour to get things squared away with the new version, needing to mostly restart from zero. I did have backups for my key files, which saved me some time and provided continuity.

If that's the case, it's probably not Mint's fault. It was gonna happen eventually.

We're actually in the midst of a crisis with my wife's health

Thanks for the prayer, Condobloke. My wife's health problems are somewhat relieved but not solved, during further investigation; which involves many visits to hospitals & clinics; mostly waiting around for tests, results, or just to see someone. The whole world is understaffed & overworked. I'll get back to whining about computing soon.

A wee message to all you EOL evangelists. You're mistaken.

You shouldn't even consider installing Linux Mint 17 because that version is End of Life meaning it doesn't receive anymore updates.
Is there a reason you want to run two versions, if you do still want to run two version consider running the most recent version along side 20 which is 21 but yes it is possible be sure to read the this.
I just recently had occasion to review this thread. Wouldn't the proper and simple answer to my simple question have been just "Edit the fstab of each version to automount the data partition at bootup"?

@Edzell :-

I couldn't care less what folks think of some of my terminology! "Fora" is the 'officially' correct plural of "forum". And I got taught to speak & write 'proper' English....for better or worse. It's kinda stuck with me, and I do get annoyed, sometimes, with the way the language is evolving. The fact that the Oxford English Dictionary - the reference "bible" for the language, as far as many are concerned - now encompasses "text-speak" as everyday terms for the English language tells me everything I need to know....

But; languages DO evolve. We must (eventually!) move with the times.....though I don't HAVE to like it. The thing that astounds me the most is just how badly some of my fellow countrymen manage to mangle their mother-tongue..... jeez

Mike. ;)
Do you use the so-called-word 'unbeknownst'?

^^^ Lol!!

I believe I have, on occasion.

See, my old man sent me to a public school here in the UK, because he wanted me to have a really good education.....and then he thought I'd follow him into the family business. Of course, as youngsters do, I went through my schooling, but then had completely different ideas about what I was going to do with my life. The old man wasn't happy with me, but he eventually accepted that it was MY life, and that I was the one that would have to live it....

It was during my 6th-form - 'A'-level - years that I developed my love of graphic design......encouraged by an art teacher who was convinced that I had a lot of potential. (????) I did quite a number of advertising posters'n'stuff for my portfolio; I also did a number for a bunch of the seniors who'd put their own rock band together.....called "Stuffed Tomato", of all things... I made such a good job of promoting the band, they took me on as their 'promotions manager'..! :p

Anyroad, it's nice to see you again. I thought you'd either snuffed it or else given up on us as a bad job. Glad to see you're still about...

"Glad to see you're still about..." Thanks for that! I'm currently experiencing a disquieting condition which the medicos can neither cure nor explain. Like all such conditions lately, I'm wondering if it's 'The Beginning of the End'. At my age, why not? I just have to remember each day to be 'Glad that I'm Still About.'

Like you I had a Good British (Scottish) education, but in a surprisingly pretentious building - now over 200 years old - in a run down area that's to this day held up as an example of urban squalor.

My parents had me handling the 3Rs by age 4 so early school was a breeze. (Later, I discovered you had to work at it.) I was always "good at" English so of course I became proud of that and somewhat pedantic; but I'm nowhere near as erudite as I like to feel. And I was always at home with the rough & vulgar local vernacular when appropriate.

So - I dunno. What can we discuss; does spelling really matter? (lol :))

Who's your favourite wordsmith? I nominate Jake Thackray, Leonard Cohen (who else could rhyme Hallelujah with Overthtrew Ya?) and RL Stevenson (e.g. "Christmas at Sea.")

What can we discuss; does spelling really matter?

I will NEVER accept 'aswell', 'alot', or 'noone'.

Those are hills I will die on!

Yeah; but you'lll probably keep singing Auld Lang "Zyne", won't you? (and saying 'Parmeszhawn' )

Not a chance, much to the consternation of those around me. I'm pedantic to a fault. Though, I do sometimes 'let my hair down' and be more casual. If the situation warrants, I'll even use the word "ain't".

In my defense, it's in the dictionary.

Though, not in my defense, the dictionary is descriptive and not prescriptive.
