{SOLVED & FUN} Backup & Recovery

If by some chance, you were to seriously destroy the Ubuntu OS that is currently on the pc...before you got a chance to back it up etc etc......
The hardware is covered by a third party (I think allState). The service for hardware warrentte has a good rating. Hardware was my main focus. The Ubuntu OS... if I recall correctly, got vauge... and I would surley read it differently knowing more of what I'm getting into. Warrenttes of anykind seem to typically read better than they preform. Fingers crossed. It was $15 bucks for three years on a $160 MiniPC

Don't be afraid to explore the bash shell in an xterm. Using the command line can really unlock the power of Linux.
I'm looking forward to exploring Terminal, probably after the first of the year. Got to get settled first. Over the years I did get a lot of work done using Bat/ & CMD files

You said... "So I can push Ubuntu or LinuxMint past their limits, learn from my mistakes"

What does that mean to you.....do you have any idea at this stage what that might encompass "
Probably a bit more dramatic than reality. Using your anology of a new car and care when new.... etc. I do take a lot of time deciding on which new car, probably more than most. After break-in, I will use the car (mostly 4x4 trucks) to the max. Push max use but not abuse. Not completely understanding where that line is, I have unintentionally gone too far. I want to understand max capablities so I can relax and drive safetly. Same with computers and OS's

The plan for increased font sizes didn;t work out....you can see from this I dont use Libre Office very often
I have read your many responses at least three time - Thank you for the wealth of comments and experiences. I will refer back to them as I move forward.

It's 4:00 am here and should go to bed cause morning coffee and a two mile walk comes around 6:30am.

So tomorrow (ie later today) I'm going to install Rescuezilla. I've got a couple of 32GB thumb drives just waiting to get out of their package. Thank you in advance for being available for the next step.

Using your anology of a new car
Ok lets... you want a new car, then you ask yourself
1]what do i need the car to do?
2]what sort of car will do what i need, 2 seater, 7 seater, pick up, crew cab? and or other
3] what colour do i want? I don't want a standard one.

so linux
1]what do i need Linux for [this is difficult because most of the 500 or so desktops will do the same thing]
2] again difficult for the same reasons
3] what desktop do I want [you have a choice of around 10, if you do not like the one that comes as default you can change it

Just like choosing a car what you want and need is different to others, what suites me or any other member may not suit you Only you can choose,
but like buying a car, most will offer a test drive [ the ability to run "live from a pen-drive to test out]

Greetings @Gainer, and welcome to the forum!
I have been reading your posts and replies and like the enthusiasm I see from you.
I have been using Linux exclusively for about 9 years; was a Windows guy when I started around 1993.
I have tried many of the Linux distros and finally settled on Linux Mint MATE as my daily driver.
As @Brickwizard said, 'Only you can choose,' which is best for you.
I too have been using LibreOffice in place of MS office. I do some writing and some spreadsheet work so am content with being able to do what I want to do with LO.
Earlier, @Condobloke mentioned about the mindset being difficult to change. He is right about that. I am finally completely out of the Windows mindset. I am very relaxed using Linux with no fear of losing whatever I want to save.
With the interest you show, you will have no problem adjusting to the 'Linux way' of doing things.
Once again, WELCOME!!!

I guess I'm not ready to to choose anything based on desktop... just yet. Just like my F-150 (in my eyes) Acceptable appearence. Darn functionable and reliable.

AND (like this site) I live less than a mile from one of the best auto-shops I've encountered in the past 3-4 decades.

So for the moment, Ubuntu seems to be quite functional while I learn to speak and drive. I'm going to stay while I get the basics down.

And Linux termonology. OMG. Two examples... "distro". When I first heard and saw that I thought it was "disco". I had no idea John Trovolta was involved.

The other, at first was "repo". Hey, I paid cash for my F-150... repo not allowed.

But so much does sound the same. RM, MkDir, Zip, but Touch & SuDo? Then I find it really is Linux-Speak but how, why, when to speak correctly. What fun! Just me grumping - each day is one more step away from Microsoft -

Goal 99% Microsoft Free Christmas

I don't need a lot - My simple Christmas List. Hope Santa looks kindly on me. I have not been bad... just grumpy. Does grumpy get charcoal?
  1. Internet
  2. Email
  3. KeePass
  4. Pop Peeper
  5. Streaming
  6. No Games
  7. Backup/Restore
Hey, I'm supposed to be retired... don't need much more. Those 7 things will cover the basics. Hey you should see this stuff on my 32" & 75" screens.

Add Coffee and Whiskey - helps my grumpy.

No, does not make me more grumpy, makes me less grumpy.

Just like here. Close to a mile high, flash floods, tornadoes, ice, snow, monsoons, 110f heat, horrible UV off the charts, high humidity.

High way speed limit 75mph (read that as cars pass at 100mph, semi's 85mph). Yup, so my F-150 4x4 is arguably a "pretty desktop" easy to look at AND DARN Functional.

Same with my all-wheel Linux... sorry - Lexus. Functional, arguably "pretty".

Function is beauty

lol, have you not yet discovered how programs are named differently in Linux?
They're all max 2-5 letters, e.g. wc, cat, patch, tail, type etc.

MS however name programs with full names and uses Hungarian notation, CammelCase almost exclusively.

If you have access to another computer you can try booting the other computer from a CD or DVD and install Linux to a USB flash drive and use that as a maintenance file system. I use one to boot my desktop. I can't tell you just how useful it has been. It makes all the difference in the world. Then make backups of the flash drive too.

Greetings @Gainer, and welcome to the forum!
You said..."I will be celebrating my 90th birthday next month - November"

First - thank you for the warm and encouraging Welcome.

Dude... (short for Old Geezer,Tango Charlie), You've got a dozen+ on me, so my hat's off to you. I hope and pray that your 90th finds you healthy, wealthy, blessed, and wise... and many more!!

Yes. I too have one coming up all too soon.

Got me thinking... 12" B&W TV that went off the air at 9:00pm.

Now I have 32" to 75" color screens in every room except the bathrooms. (I draw the line at being able to read your post while sitting...).

and stuff like typewritters, envelopes and stamps, pagers and a pocket ful of coins so when we got "beeped" we could stop at the next phone booth and call in.

OMG - phone booths - not necessarly for the pay phone but where does Superman change his curl, take off his glasses and change to legging and cape? Dr Who has it made... takes the booth with him.

and now we can sit at a computer and "talk" anytime to someone, somewhere in the world instantly. At 85mph.

Hi @Gainer, I can vouch for Rescuezilla as @Condobloke has.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Do you know of any problems downloading from their website ver 2.5.1 and installing on Ubuntu 24.04.1

Got it... Thanks for your patience. Too much of a newbie. I purchased a Mini PC with Ubuntu installed and it has what I think would be a iso burner called "Make Startup Disk". It seems to be installed and working.

Never have been a fan of bootable thumb drives, VM's, or dual-boot.

OK, I'll stop grumping, will suck-it-up and put my "big-boy-pants" on and go for it!

Wahoo (read as "Excited Thank You!)

two minutes later...

Oops.

I understand it didn't download but nothing to indicate why. Newbie is lost

Never have been a fan of bootable thumb drives,
@Gainer
if you don't want to use a pen drive , then it will cost more [unless you have all necessary bits] to use an external hard-drive, you do not want to keep your back up on the computer drives, if the computer goes wrong you won't be able to access it

The ISO Needs to be put on thumb drive via something like balena etcher or similar.

iso burner called "Make Startup Disk". It seems to be installed and working.

Yes, that will do the job

When it has finished putting RZ on the usb.....reboot the pc and boot to that usb stick

There is nothing you need to change as it goes through its boot up scenario.....just sit and watch

Eventually you will be presented with a main screen which should have RZ already open and will show backup, clone etc...choices of what you may wish to do
It may look a little different for you....i have two screens operational....and becasue of this it opens with the backup etc screen already open. You may need to click on the menu....bottom left hand corner, and then click on rescuezilla

Be sure the external drive you are going to store the backup on is plugged in
