Greetings all,
my HP Laptop works well with WiFi but it cannot see therefore connect to my Ethernet cable connection. When I click on my wireless connection/network settings to look for some sort of cable connection area the response is 'wired cable unplugged'. In the Network Connections tab under 'Ethernet' there is 'wired connection 1'. I have a security code for my modem and I am guessing that I need to do something in this area so Minty can see what's going on? Cheers

OK silly Sunday question,
have you opened the network manager [icon on the bottom right of the mint screen] and checked for wired connection switched on?

Yes. The top image above is from the network manager. Have also done the usual - checked the cable, Rebooted with WiFi active and ethernet cable connected, rebooted after disabling wiFi and with ethernet cable connected. So far, no good on all counts. Able to quickly get WiFi up and running but Minty cannot see the ethernet cable.

When you connect via WI-FI log-in to your modem and see if it has 802.1x option and whether it's enabled.
To log-in to your modem enter it's IP into address bar in web browser.

To learn the IP while on WI-FI run command ip route and look under "default" line.

OK. Logged into my modem but cannot see 802.1x option. There is a 802.1x Security option in the Network Manager but only access to the modem via the web requires a username and password so not here. The ethernet (and access to the WiFi) do require a password so I think that I need to insert this password somewhere.

WI-FI needs WI-FI password but LAN should not require it, and since there is no 802.1x option in modem then this tab in Network Manager is IMO not needed (should stay disabled).

I suggest you set Link-negotiation from your initial screenshot to "Auto".
Try also other LAN ports on modem, but this might reset your config in Network Manager.

OK Set to Auto but no result.
Oh well, will need to think further or just stick to WiFi. Thanks for your suggestions

will need to think further or just stick to WiFi.
I think of 2 more possible causes:
1. LAN card is disabled in BIOS or
2. LAN port is disabled in modem or it requires some additional config.

For point one enter BIOS and make sure LAN is enabled there, and for 2, log-in to router and verify LAN settings, if unsure share some screenshots from modem LAN options.

1]try hot swap [whilst still power on remove Ethernet cable count 10 then reinstall cable].
2 check cable for damage [signs of being over twisted, stretched, bent too tight] [if its a cheap CCA [copper coated aluminium core] they are easily damaged if often rolled/unrolled., If defective replace with Minimum cat 5E all copper core
3] if above doesn't work try
sudo modprobe -r r8169 && sudo modprobe r8169 && sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

The modem is slaved to both my PC and laptop. Ethernet works ok on my PC and it also worked OK on my laptop 6 months ago when I still had Windows installed, so I reckon that the fault is with my Mint installed laptop. Will keep looking. Thanks Caffeine. Cheers

Thanks Brick. Will do. Cheers

Notice the "eno1 state: down" - try the following
ip link set eno1 up
does it work?

Thanks Gator. Tried that but...

Try bringing interface up as super user:

sudo ip link set eno1 up
Thanks for persisting with this. Didn't seem to do anything.

johnj@johnj-HP-Pavilion-Power-Laptop-15-cb0xx:~$ sudo ip link set eno1 up

According to your output it reports no errors so the command completed successfully unlike without sudo

If the link is not detected, it cannot be set to "up". The error message mentioned in post #1, "wired cable unplugged", tries to explain the reason the ethernet is not detected.

I would also have tried to set the link up, as @CaffeineAddict (in post #16) and @GatorsFan (in post #12) suggested, but I would have had little to no faith in any success.

The evidence that it worked is mentioned in post #10:
it also worked OK on my laptop 6 months ago when I still had Windows installed

One way of testing the hardware is to reload MS and see if works. A laborious business.
Linux at the moment is saying there's an intractable problem.

If it's a "wire cable unplugged" issue, but the ethernet cable is attached, then there may be a cable problem, or a problem with the connectors in the ethernet cable ends, or a problem in the laptop socket itself. The latter suggestion being the most unfortunate if it is the case. There's the socket in the router too to consider.

this may sound silly, if its a laptop, Has it gone into hard block [flight mode] this does sometimes happen when installing the Os.
