(SOLVED) HP Laptop cannot see ethernet connection

According to your output it reports no errors so the command completed successfully unlike without sudo

Please post output of ip link
Here it is.
johnj@johnj-HP-Pavilion-Power-Laptop-15-cb0xx:~$ ip link

If the link is not detected, it cannot be set to "up". The error message mentioned in post #1, "wired cable unplugged", tries to explain the reason the ethernet is not detected.

I would also have tried to set the link up, as @CaffeineAddict (in post #16) and @GatorsFan (in post #12) suggested, but I would have had little to no faith in any success.

The evidence that it worked is mentioned in post #10:

One way of testing the hardware is to reload MS and see if works. A laborious business.
Linux at the moment is saying there's an intractable problem.

If it's a "wire cable unplugged" issue, but the ethernet cable is attached, then there may be a cable problem, or a problem with the connectors in the ethernet cable ends, or a problem in the laptop socket itself. The latter suggestion being the most unfortunate if it is the case. There's the socket in the router too to consider.
Thanks Osprey.

So your LAN interface is now UP compared to what is was before, it was DOWN.

Is your wired connection still not recognized?
I suggest you try unplugging and plugging the cable again and then check again, and if this doesn't work, delete your "Wired Connection 1" and recreate it manually then check again if link status is still UP.

Thanks everyone. I had a very close look at my HP laptop ethernet socket and the cable is suspiciously floppy/loose. This can't be good. I know the cable and the ethernet output are both OK so I am starting to think about a faulty ethernet socket itself.

Yes. after plugging and unplugging a few times the socket and cable end a quite loose and floppy. I reckon this is the fault.

Greetings all,
my HP Laptop works well with WiFi but it cannot see therefore connect to my Ethernet cable connection. When I click on my wireless connection/network settings to look for some sort of cable connection area the response is 'wired cable unplugged'. In the Network Connections tab under 'Ethernet' there is 'wired connection 1'. I have a security code for my modem and I am guessing that I need to do something in this area so Minty can see what's going on? Cheers

Hi,

have you checked dmesg -T for driver errors?

Is it possible you have static IP set? Or your interface is set to use DHCP, but you don't have a DHCP router?

Thanks Dos2. It all worked ok back in the day when I had Windows. I reckon the socket is stuffed as the cable flops around. Cheers

if you 'steady' the connection by manually holding it in place....pressure pushing it in ,,,gently....etc etc....does it make a difference?.....watch the ethernet icon in the systray carefully while doing this

I know this is rough......but it may establish a crook connection definitively

Yep tried that, Condo. Steady, steady, gentle little wriggle here and there, etc. All the while watching closely for any hint of change onscreen. Sadly... nuh. Oh well. The crazy thing is that 6 months ago when I had Windows onboard it all didn't seem to matter. It flopped around then as well so I thought this would be ok for Mint. A final desperation move would be to make some Foxclone backups then do a completely new install. I know, desperate means, etc but maybe a new install will pickup the socket and cable. It might be fun just to see if it does. I can then always easily go back to current Mint which by the way is running superbly after all my fiddling and fine tuning. Cheers

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot ?

That would save a fresh install and a great deal of fiddling and fine tuning etc etc etc.

Yes. Have been Timeshifting and Foxcloning furiously so have backups. Not too clear how this works though. Suppose I do a clean install. Then I could call on a Timeshift save and this would bring me back how my setup was without losing my fiddles and with the ethernet connection post the fresh install? Have I got this sort of right? If post fresh install and then by some good fortune Mint sees my ethernet and I then call on Foxclone, I think that this then reverts back to not seeing the ethernet as per my current situation. Oh dear, what complicated weaving we do. :)

Where are your Timeshift snapshots saved to ?

Access Timeshift in menu and open it.

What date was the Ethernet connection working properly?

Is there a snapshot there on that date?....after that date is obviously no good, before it is ok.

I know what you mean. Timeshift is saved to a separate SSD from the OS. So no probs there. The ethernet connection worked about 6 months ago when I had Windows OS installed onto an old SSD. I then replaced the old SSD with a new one then installed mint onto it. Bottom line, sadly I have never had the new SSD with Mint that has worked via the ethernet connection so Timeshift is no help. Only recently did I actually connect the ethernet cable to see if I could get it working. From Mint install I have just always connected via WiFi and never bothered to try the ethernet connection. Had I a Timeshift with a working ethernet then sure it just would be back and forth and trying things to get it up and running. So the above has led me into desperado territory where I could try to do a clean install of Mint but this time have the ethernet cable attached so Mint hopefully can see it. Bottom line number two, if a clean Mint install still doesn't see the ethernet connection then I am back to my latest Timeshift (or Foxclone) to get me back to where I am now.

ok...give me a few minutes

Humm. My hands were appropriately clasped. I pressed Reset and Apply a few times

- No response, no action, no nuthing. Even tried Forget (hands clasped even tighter) and it Forgot alright by eliminating the little setup wheel - Gulp. Rebooted and the same as before.

I mentioned two members up above, they will pop in and take a looksee when they are online.

I have never had internet problems,,,,,which is a good thing because I know next to nothing about it !

Does the ethernet cable plug into a modem/router....have you turned that thing off...waited 30 seconds and then tried again ?
