Hello and my laptop's screen doesn't work on linux and only gives me a black screen but my monitor works just fine but on windows the laptop screen works just fine.
I tried many distros like linux mint, and kubuntu and the same thing.
Ubuntu says that my laptop's screen is unknown and i know what is nomodeset and it makes gaming worse.

os:
Ubuntu 20.04
Windows 11

specs:
core i5 1035g1
16gb of ram
256 ssd
intel uhd graphics
1920x1080 14 inch screen

laptop model:
gateway GWTN141-4 from 2020

I dont think there is an inherent problem with gateway products, your laptop screen is of they type used by many manufactures,
two things are going through my mind at the moment a driver problem ... please cut and paste back the the result of terminal command inxi -G [depending on your current distribution you may need to install inxi]
or it could be a switching problem coding wise [not my area of expertise]
addendum
sudo apt install inxi

G'day young @theoctoguy and welcome to linux.org :)

Subject to what we find with the output from my friend's question above, we may take a look at output from a command called

xrandr

which is useful where more than one screen/monitor is involved.

Cheers

ok
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel driver: N/A
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: fbdev
unloaded: modesetting,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3
using safe graphics because i don't feel like hooking up my computer to a monitor
update on normal graphics mode only shows the 2nd display's because that one is working just fine

Still need the inxi report with both screens connected [there could be more than one problem]

Now to look at the immediate problem, ubuntu 20.4 comes with an older Linux kernel and doesn't contain the drivers required for your Intel graphics, your machine is less than 2 years old, so options..
1] update your Ubuntu to the latest version
2] update your Kernel to the latest version
3] manually install the drivers
4] change to a distribution that already has the latest drivers included.

that looks like the correct driver so the problem lays with the computers connection to the monitor, now your leaving my area
please run terminal command .. xrandr ..[with both screens connected] and paste back the Full report
hopefully someone with a bit more practice with multiple screens will pick up on it
