Spam...

I don't want to give the spammers any credit, but it was impressive.

Some changes have been made since then. I'll not detail those changes. I'm optimistic that those changes will be a long-term solution. I'm still seeing some of the spam, specifically some of the 'call for support' spam, but it's not making it into the regular site and is being stopped in the queue.

So, we can be optimistic.

@truckerDave :-

We had the same problem over at BleepingComputer. I joined the staff there at the beginning of 2020; when COVID kicked in & the first 'lock-downs' began, we were hit by an absolute tsunami of the stuff. There's a staff of 10 mods over there, two Globals, and an Admin.....and then there's "the guv'nor" - the site's founder in 2004, Lawrence Abrams (known as 'Grinler' on the forums).

The crap was coming in faster than all of us together could deal with it. A lot of it had to be automated, because I don't know of anyone capable of posting that many different posts in dozens of different sub-forums more or less simultaneously...

Eventually, the "guvnor" - himself a talented coder, and a well-known figure in the InfoSec community - came up with a bunch of scripts that gave us some much-needed tools to deal with all this spam. We managed to get on top of it, and stayed on top....thanks to those tools. If it weren't for them, I reckon the site would have gone under long ago.

@KGIII :-

The "call for support" stuff is in fact one of the most common this last few years. One of the bots Grinler built - SpamBot - is 'trained' by us regularly giving it new variations to learn. The trouble with the "call for support" stuff is that the spammer only has to write the title slightly differently, and it slips past SpamBot's 'detector'.

There's never any links with these. Just the number, repeated at least a dozen different ways in the body of the post itself.....which is almost impossible to automate against, so the 10 of us work together in tandem with SpamBot. We usually win......but it IS an ongoing battle.

Yup. I've seen it before, but not at this level. This one spam-fest was pretty large compared to what I've seen in the past. We still have stronger measures that can be taken, should this become a trend.

Seems they are back. @Rob would it be possible to get the 30 second report limit taken off of the regular members for helping to report spam? Because currently I have to wait 30 seconds after reporting a post as spam and that gets really time consuming if I have to wait 30 seconds in order to tag the next spam post if there are a lot of them?

The site went down when I was 3/4 of the way through

I am late on board today folks. I had 3 approvals to consider, which I spam cleaned and that also eliminated at least 10 of your Reports, so you will not receive the usual notice of resolution, but your efforts are appreciated.

I cleaned out another 5 spammers from our new Members list, best I can do for now.

I'll leave it to @Rob to comment further.

Cheers

Looks like I missed all of the action earlier. I've been busy with work all morning, so I didn't get a chance to check in first thing. There hasn't been any spam activity since Wiz cleared that last lot out. There were a few new signups in the moderation queue, who were all linked to previously banned spam accounts, so they've ended up getting pre-emptively spam cleaned.

Hi,

Once again i noticed something odd was going on which makes me suggest the same thing: deny instant gratification for newcomers, delay display of their trophy just long enough to demotivate these parasitic actions, but this is only an idea expressed from the user side as i'd never risk to get crazy enough to want to be moderator myself...

;)

hmm i'll look into that.

I removed a bunch of spam yesterday afternoon (usa/eastern) but didn't see any others around.

I missed it. It was over by the time my shift started.

That's not a complaint.

Moderation power to all active and long standing members is what I would to deal with the spam once and for all.

The count of Administrators and Moderators currently present is too low considering nobody is hanging on the forums 0-24h.
Just my 2 cents.

Our spammer has tried a new trick today, he opened multiple post with just 2 letters in the title and body, then came back editing by copy paste,

he has been doing that since he started around 40 minutes ago.....he started of sloww, too....the pace has hotted up in th elast 10 minutes or so

No idea what his 'trick ' is all about.....must think he is fooling the world

he went offline....must be time for a cuppa

I think it might be a good idea to add admin/mod approval for new user accounts, so it can be checked if multiple new accounts have been made from the same location. But that would be more work for the staff so probably not an option.

It must be the same guy that has been spamming the last few days, by now you would think he/she will have realised that spam doesn't sty on our boards long enough for the time spent posting it, I understand the boys have been blocking the ISP used each time,
