I don't remember what I did to get the "Help" menu. I saw the 'q', just like you said. It exited all of that.
 
I'm looking an Ubuntu forum. Someone asked a question almost exactly like mine, reformatting the hard drive with GParted using live Ubunto. They are saying it can be done. I formatted a USB earlier today. There is nothing about Microsoft on that USB like there is on everything else

How do I erase/format a harddisk from a live CD?

I'm looking at a few things. I might leave some observations for you. Just look at them tomorrow if I do

I forgot that I can't see the hard disk drive in GParted.

But I can see it in "Disks", where it can format the drive.

My brain is tired. Any more than that would be jumbled recall. I would confuse myself. I think I'll go to sleep now.
 
Disks full name is : gnome-disk-utility

Very reliable.

click on the gear icon. If the disc is mounted....unmount it by clicking the square just to the left of the gear


format should be
 
If there is more than one partition, you can click on Resize......and expand the size of the biggest partition to the complete size of the whole drive. That will effectively make just one big partition.....which you can then format to ext4
