Testers for next inxi (pinxi) - USB, Bluetooth, USB upgrades

I just finished installing wget and using it to fetch pinxi... and I updated it. I did not install X, so I have no desktop. I didn't get dmidecode info on first run of pinxi, so I see above that I need to install that. Pinxi runs okay, it seems, so I think that perl is already there. I'll check.

Right now I'm looking to plug in a USB and mount it so that I can copy the pinxi output to it. That will be easier, than ftp or email or other things, I think.

Okay, here we go. Dmidecode is installed (perl already was installed), and pinxi was updated. This is OpenBSD 6.8 installed on bare metal on an old HP desktop (2009). Do you want a report from a regular user? I will have to create one, if you do.

A few small things I spot, but overall it's looking really good, definitely way better than inxi 3.3.01 if you want compare, that's the same install: wget https://smxi.org/inxi and so on.

I was slightly shocked when I tested the BSDs, now and then, like now, I dive into getting BSD stuff working, and it's always quite dismaying to see just how much has broken over the space of a year or two or three. On the bright side, I never really had NetBSD support at all, and now I do.

Good to see the removable type working for drives, it's all delicate pattern matching. I've removed some openbsd specific tests internally, and made all the detections more generic, that helped get netbsd working a lot better since many of the openbsd detections work fine for netbsd stuff, I just was never able to get netbsd running before.

I'm still puzzled by why openbsd is failing to get the virtual terminal for running in, but this stuff gets pretty arcane pretty quickly, so I will just make a note of it being a thing, and maybe one day in the future Ill learn a key bit of missing info. I'm suspecting that because it's pinxi running, not you directly in terminal, openbsd doesn't have the terminal data available, but I don't know, it's hard to diagnose that one, and it's a small point.

As you can see, pinxi is turning into a real memory hog, basically to speed up its operations, it dumps as much stuff into ram as quickly as it can so it can then proceed to work with the data in ram, not off disks or subshells, but that has a cost, of course, but only for a second or so.

Thanks a lot for testing and showing some data, this openbsd looks pretty good I have to say, best it's ever been, by quite a margin.

The /dev/sd size is failing, if you can run: dmesg | grep ^sd

and show the output, that will show if the pattern is just failing, or if the data just is not there. That's the only real error I see, plus the duplicated drivers in one place, that should have been filtered out but i didn't realize there were situations with two drivers listed in the first place there.

The /dev/sd size is failing, if you can run: dmesg | grep ^sd
That outputs the following:
Code:
sd0 at scsibus1 targ 0 lun 0: <ATA, ST3750528AS, HP22> naa.5000c5001407a7e5
sd0: 715404MB, 512 bytes/sector, 1465149168 sectors
sd1 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 0: <Generic-, Compact Flash, 1.00> removable
sd2 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 1: <Generic-, SM/xD-Picture, 1.00> removable
sd3 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 2: <Generic-, SD/MMC, 1.00> removable
sd4 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 3: <Generic-, MS/MS-Pro, 1.00> removable

This desktop is an exact copy of the other that I use with the Live NomadBSD USB. If you notice any similarities, that is why (like all those removable drives). But the Nomad one has an SSD and this OpenBSD uses an HDD... for now.

Oh, great, no data so there was nothing missed, re the sizes, I got sizes from usb flash drives in openbsd, but I guess it can vary. Thanks a lot for following through on these things, getting ready to release the new inxi soon, just a few last steps I have to do before each release since they are always the last things I do, doc updates, man updates, and some other small things.

I should probably see about fixing the double driver thing, that should be easy enough, it was probably driver0, drive1 is my guess, the way bsds number their drivers.

The bright side is inxi 3.3.02 is going to have by far the best BSD support out of the box of any inxi ever, which I didn't think I'd get around to doing, but time on hands lol...

Sound great! Let me know if you want any more from any of these 3 test setups I have now. I doubt that you'll wait for the release of FreeBSD 13, but I could give RC1 another try if you want it. I would probably have to overwrite OpenBSD to do that, but it's no problem. I think I could also easily enough restore OpenBSD again too if needed (install is on a CD... because I didn't get USB install to work).

The duplicated usb driver issue should be corrected now, it just wasn't testing if it already had that driver in its list.

Just as an aside, I find the openbsd install process super easy and fast, and the wiindow manager it ends up with is totally fine for short term, though I'd use another one if I were going to actually run it, but with user setup, default xorg stuff, it all 'just works', their installer does the job well I think.

Any testing you feel like doing is great, I'm glad you mentioned the freebsd 13 beta because otherwise this would have been broken for freebsd pci devices out of the box, which would have sucked. I don't love how much logic I need to use for pci/usb data detection in the bsds, but that's how it goes I guess.

Yes, it was... but I had to learn some new things, like file sets. My first attempt using USB was unsuccessful, but after burning the iso to a CD, it worked great. I didn't do anything to install X, but it seems that it is there... but startx gives me errors. I don't really need a desktop for this, unless you want pinxi to run from inside a terminal in the GUI. Heck, I had to learn everything! LOL. It uses pkg_add instead of pkg install, the usb drives are identified differently, etc. But it didn't take too long.

I'm off to bed in a moment, but I'll update pinxi tomorrow with OpenBSD and give it another go. And I'll see if FreeBSD 13 RC1 will install on that box too. Cheers

I'm not having any luck with FreeBSD 13 at this point. Before erasing OpenBSD, I got these reports below... not much, if any, difference from before except I noticed that I had removed the flash drive. I don't think there was any difference with the dmesg report.

OK, I finally got FreeBSD 13 to install... on bare metal, on a different laptop (HP). This is UEFI based, and I suspect that my older MBR stuff was the problem earlier. This output below is from your patch version 104, so that is an update from my other reports earlier today. The dmesg | grep ^da did not initially give any output until I plugged in a usb drive. I think FreeBSD 12 was UFS, and 13 is ZFS. So, here you go:

You're catching some good stuff here, I just did a change and wondered about it, the 'login' item appearing in Shell: shouldn't be there if it's root or sudo/doas, but my change made it go in there anyway. Will have to add that as a fallback so it only appears if all else failed.

FreeBSD just released v13 RC2. I have downloaded it already and will give it a go tomorrow, as well as running through my other test setups with your latest patch version, 104 (unless you have updated it again too).

I ended up having to redo the start client logic significantly, that was a mess, it had some old mistakes in it that had carried over and were confusing. I may have found one reason your running-in are vanishing, tested, seems ok now. Luckily you are triggering some cases by doing things I don't normally do, which is why other people testing is extremely helpful, thanks a lot.

These last fixes are proving to be some of the more difficult ones because they are exposing some very old logic mistakes that it's hard to see since they have been there so long. Very subtle stuff. that's actually a real advantage of getting the stuff working on the BSDs, they trigger so many corner cases that the overall tool gets more robust for everyone.

Because I don't know any better! ;):D But I am glad to help you, and it is also self-serving because I want to learn more about the BSD's. I ran all of my test setups this morning through pinxi-104. I'll post each result separately by computer and/or OS differences.

Make sure to always update pinxi with -U before running these tests (unless of course I forgot to commit it, if so, sorry, my mistake), 105 went up last night, with more fixes for corner case running in issues, there's still a few pesky ones left to treat of, but it's easier to understand the logic now.

Good to see the bluetooth device detection working, wasn't positive the logic would work on BSD, though it should have. Partition label and uuid also working, which is good to see, that was also largely theoretical, though again, it should have worked, so it's good to see it did. Same for partition block size. That data only is present of course for real partitions aka slices, not logical ones like we find with hammer or zfs or various others.

The 'login' bit was a stray broken bit that kind of exposed so me bad assumptions and hard to understand code in that logic, it's been better organized, though I'm still not catching the full possible set of events there, but it's getting closer, there's only one corner case I'm seeing that's not quite right now. I'm debating whether to keep the logic for shell detection openbsd/netbsd friendly, or to make it more robust so it can always get the shell the same way that the running-in is always supposed to get the start client like xterm, kate, xfce-terminal, etc.

The L2/L3 mixup in FreeBSD is still there, that will require some data to figure out, but I'll double check the logic again to make sure there's no easy explanation.
