If you have a CD/DVD drive, that works, but is much slower than a thumb drive.I believe some distros offer an on-line install, but I have never tried that.If your flash drive is getting hot enough to smell,it is probably garbage. It is nit a good idea to use cheap off-brand drives ,especially to install a system.I have heard horror stories about drives bought on line.Better to get one from a local store you trust.

I've never had a bad flash drive although I agree it is best to purchase a quality brand flash drive.

It's normal for flash drives to get warm when in use or when under heavy use.

Flash drives that get hot enough to release an odor are close to death and should be trashed.

I like Lexar and PNY flash drives.

How is the flash memory installed.

Is it removeable / replaceable.

What type of flash memory is it.

If the flash memory is soldered to the board then you are SOL.

Might want to qualify SOL Nelson - English is not the OP's first language.
