Why zip? Well, I mention that in the article. There are a few good reasons/times to use zip, but the biggest is everyone knows what to do with a .zip file - and every operating system can deal with a .zip file - probably natively.

Feedback is awesome. Heck, the article even got a comment before I made the time to post it here. Sweet!

I don't doubt the importance of the terminal but why not right click on the file and select compress?

Also, I kinda want to use your question in a meta article. Something like, "Where do I get my article ideas from?" and a few similar topics like "Why do I pick the subjects I pick?"

Much easier to right click a file or folder and click compress.

Is this feature available in vanilla installs of all DEs?

Many people prefer to do things the GUI way. No problem; do what works for you. I prefer the CLI way in most things, because I have more control, and I feel I have a better understanding of my OS.
