is it safe to unmount the duplicate partition?
Code:
sudo umount /media/hdd2/Gusts

can i take precautions?

You can unmount most filesystems, (as long as they aren't the main system ones).

/dev/sdb1 on /media/hdd2 type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,x-gvfs-show)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/hdd2/Gusts type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)

If you have anything in it, you will still be able to access it under /media/hdd2, as Gusts is just a directory
