Hi
-getting tired of windows/feel confined/less secured
-I have some minor experience with linux
-past reasons i keep going back to windows is heat issues with laptops, i seem to have problems trying to get fan control to work. I recently had installed POPos.
It was great seeing that i could see my system temps, unlike the past, but could not get undervolting the cpu to work or control the fans. After running stress tests my fan rpm would only hit 3-4000 rpm, from hearing the fans. Even when hitting 90c+ the fan rpms never maxed out. max is 6000 rpms.
Decided i had to go back to windows because theres no way i could game with 90c+ temps when max cpu temp is 100c.
When trying to reinstall windows(trying to get into the bios) i kept getting failed boot, finally getting into the bios the letters were all messed up like someone did a terrible job wiping a chalk board.
Messing around i was able to finally install windows from a usb and everything was back to normal.

i was wondering if there were any linux os that would work well with my nitro 5 AN517-51, and i could run games on without hitting 90s.

i5 9300h
1650 gtx
500gb m.2
8gb ram

G'day Ninjii, Welcome to Linux.org

Just a wild guess, but I would think the problem would be with the laptop, not with the operating system.

I was kinda thinking it was, but was hoping there was another way :(

G'day @Ninjii from another Aussie :)

I can't help you with the actual rig, nor with the games, but Googling

acer nitro 5 Nitro AN517-51 linux

reveals a number of articles and vids

Have you read any of those?

I did some looking around and these laptops seem to be notorious for overheating.

These might be worth a read.
The first two links / articles recommend to disable turbo boost.

Most Linux have two things you can install to control the fan speed
"lm-sensors" and "fancontrol"

"lm-sensors" is a hardware health monitoring package for Linux. It allows you
to access information from temperature, voltage, and fan speed sensors. It
works with most newer systems.

"fancontrol" contains a daemon that calculates fan speeds from temperatures
and sets the corresponding PWM outputs to the computed values. This is
useful when this feature is not provided by the BIOS or ACPI, which should
normally be the case on a laptop.

They are usually available through the repositories, I know they are with Buntu anyways I have them on my laptop

Windows 10 i dont have heating issues, i undervolt the cpu and run directx 11, my temps drop 20c,
Is there a way to disable turbo boost in linux?

For Buntu based OS there is a guide here
