hi, I need some advice on what Linux distro to use for my older computer:
Motherboard GA-B75M-D3H, i5-3470, 8GB RAM, GPU GTX 550 ti.
I tried Linuxmint 22.1, but there was a problem with the GPU, I can't install the nvidia driver, only the nouveau driver worked, which I wouldn't mind, I don't play games, I just browse the internet, but the system froze all over probably because of the nouveau driver, only a hard reset helped. thank you

problem solved, I replaced the GPU with a GTX 770 ti and it works perfectly with Linux mint

I still have one problem, I have a GPU NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 770] sometimes the fan runs at full power for only a few seconds, then it calms down for a while, nothing happens, then full power again. I disassembled the GPU, cleaned it, and re-pasted it. Thank you

Is it related to your activity such as playing games, or does it happen in idle mode?

You can watch GPU temps with nvtop, if it's normal (50° -> 80°) then it's nothing to worry about.

Not uncommon, the sensors on the GPU will decide, if its a desktop, make sure it is away from direct sunlight, and radiators. Warm air vents etc. and that all the case cooling is clean

no, I don't play games, I just browse the internet, and it's a desktop computer, the ventilation is fine, the GPU temperature sensor is 31 degrees, but the fans are starting up and slowing down all over the place. It doesn't matter, it's just a little distracting.

I just updated the BIOS to the latest version and I found that the fans only turn on occasionally so progress, we'll see, thanks everyone for the help. If it doesn't work soon, I'll try the last option of removing the BIOS battery for a while and resetting the BIOS settings

There is a big variety of distributions you can install, such as: Debian, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, etc. It depends mostly on what you main use for Linux will be, and this isn't something you have to deside right away.
