Hi everyone,

Appreciating and looking for advises on a selection ...

I've been given a requirement to use one of the following distributions for a series of experiments with database servers (Vertica and most likely PostgreSQL too):

-----

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Debian Linux 6 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

-----

Which one would you pick and why?

Thanks greatly for help.

I prefer Ubuntu because

  • stability
  • support
  • commonly used as a server
  • developed by a commercial corporation (Canonical Ltd.)
  • I have used it as a server before
  • lightweight and fast
  • secure

From your list I would pick Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Ubuntu is popular so it's easy to find help and picking an LTS release is important so you get security updates for a long time.
