planning to buy a laptop. i want to learn compiling my own linix. i found "linux from scratch" useful and beaitiful.

however, how do i know whether my package supports using at same time in virtual terminals (i mean alt+f1, alt+f2). for example: i dont want to miss my emails.

any sugestions are welcome.

This is built into the kernel.
(The mutiple TTY's, not the email)

Keep in mind if you'll using a Xwindows GUI, the virtual terminals won't work.
You just open another window for the email app.

LOL, I mean if you are running in Xwindows mode, you can't use Alt-F1 and Alt-f2 to switch between terminals, like you can in CLI mode.

But yes, even if you have Xwindows installed, you can either..
A have multiple terminal sessions open in multiple console windows...
or...
You can go back to CLI only mode, and then the Alt-function keys will still work.
