Here's the story:

This is a huge leap forward to get free software and open source software to reach many more users without requiring the developers to explicitly compile a Windows binary.

For the Linux Kernel and the Distributions themselves may be good news, too, because it will run in much more systems and will get much more edge cases debugged. Although WSL2 uses the Microsoft Linux Kernel running alongside the Windows Kernel, you still have to chose your distribution (e.g.: debian or manjaro) and install it on WSL2. My personal dream is to Windows to become based in a Linux Kernel, either vanilla or fork, the same way that Darwin is a Free BSD fork. It will simplify things a lot.

What I'm not sure, though, is how this will impact the Desktop Environments projects.
