Hello all. What is or are the useful terminal commands to identify a problem or to send useful information to a helpful forum troubleshooter. Occasionally when I have a query on the forums responders will ask me to provide information via a terminal screenshot about how my system is set up and/or what the problem is. If I have some terminal commands ready in my bottom draw I can impress troubleshooters that I am not a complete nob when posing a forum question. Cheers

It depends on the distro for me. inxi is good, but it's not installed on suse, redhat, fedora, or slackware by default.
lspci comes with just about every distro. lshw is also popular.

inxi ...is a full featured system information....if you are running Linux Mint, it is available in the Software Manager

inxi -A .....will spit out info re sound. (copy and paste it into the terminal and you will see what I mean)

inxi -Fxxxrz .....will spit out all kinds of stuff...

inxi -Fxz .....ditto....lots of info

Read the outputs carefully...make a note of the info.....so when asked, you will be sure of which one to use

Try not to get overwhelmed....the guys here even have a Terminal command that will make the coffee......there are literally thousands of these commands

Ah Ha. Now we are talking. Good to know Software Manager does all the work installing the thing. Will check it out. Cheers
Umm. Tried to download it but see below

doesn't seem to be a Linux Mint version
oh but there is, just open a terminal [little black icon with $- in it, and type inxi -FnxxZ [ or copy and paste]and enter, and You will get a full hardware schedule for your machine with the relevant drivers installed now this is safe for you to post to on line forums for help, FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE try inxi -Fnxx [without the z filter] and see the difference, and lastly try sudo inxi -Fnxx [you will need your password this time] and you will get even more information, do not give this information out even to us if we ask

for a breakdown of the inxi codes then run inxi -h [at this stage we will not expect you to fully understand them.

Excellent.
Tried all of the above and got lots of groovy output, most of which I don't understand. But that's OK. It's for others who are trying to help me with stuff.
So I don't need to go via Software Manager to install anything?

No you have MINT, and it doesn't matter if it's Mint21 mate mint 21 cinnamon or Mint LMDE, it comes already installed and configured [if it wasn't then you would not have been able to run the commands]

Thanks everyone. All of the above is exactly what I was after. Cheers

OK. Got it.
inxi is solely an information application, so you can play around as much as you like with it, it will not change anything on the machine

Also.....take a peek here

The info on these tips etc etc are on a site ownd and managed by none other than our very own KGIII (Moderator)

You can find a link via that page above for its home page. Very handy info to have ....it is extensive

And...on that note...extensive......I use an app (also in the software manager ) called: zim desktop wiki.....but search for it in software manager using : desktop wiki .....that will find it.

It will store a whole boatload of info....instantly accessible to you.

Show some care with how you organise it....it will make the info either hard to find or easy....especially as it starts to fill up.

I had a quick look at the KGIII link. After retrieving my socks from across the room and having a cuppa tea I reckon that finally I have found another someone who actually provides some useful and Basic (repeat Basic) hints and tips for us newbies. Of course, a lot of it I didn't understand but, for example topics such as 'How to ask a good question' I found extremely enlightening. 'Don't submit images...submit text...so responders can cut/past/etc'. Who would of thunk it? I have bookmarked him and look forward to his hints and tips, as I do yours too of course.

This will give you more info and then some.
