if this is ineffective, and again I will make an assumption that its a laptop of sorts, then disconnect the mains cable and hold the power button down for 30 seconds, reconnect power and switch on

I downloaded the ISO normallyIf you're on Windows, you can download the .iso as a torrent.
I mention this because torrents automatically verify a file's integrity. They do so to ensure you get the file specified.
