This is very true and are large too...gone are the days of little partitions.

I have a win 7 Virtual machine (VM) it has LibreOffice...it's no problem to create documents and transfer between both.

I don't have internal storage Drives anymore and I don't partition Drives either...haven't done that since 2011. Now I know what the OP is trying to do...I'll say its impossible...how can you have an icon or shortcut to a Drive that's not there...you can't. I pulled out my old Western Digital...

Try the Software Manager...heaps to try.

To uninstall software I either use the Terminal or in the Menu select the software...right click and choose uninstall.

I know you can create shorts for Internal Drives on the Desktop but I don't know about External Drives.

You still don't understand what I mean...you still have the Home Folder open on the Desktop...close it. Here is my Desktop... No Home Folder open. Here is my HDD mounted on the Desktop... This is the way it should be...anyway even with the Home Folder open the HDD will mount over the Home Folder.

You'd be better off with Linux Mint Cinnamon...some of us have been using it for a long time and will help with any problems you might have...good luck.

You've only been using Linux for a very short time, haven't you. At no time did I say I was using the file manager to mount my HDD or any Flash Drive...why would I. Forget the file manager...the image I showed you was on the Desktop... Here's the same image expanded to show the Desktop...

Now that's funny...haven't heard of badware before.

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean. When I plug in my 2TB HDD...it mounts and opens...same with Flash Drives. To remove it I must click the blue X in the top right corner. Then Right click the External HDD Desktop icon and select Safely Remove Drive...is this what you mean ?
