Can AI Zoom the Popularity of Linux?

G'day @jumponlinux and welcome to linux.org.

I thought that Linux is the OS and that things like Mint and Fedora are the GUi's you can choose to layer over it, no?

Although I suspect you may not be here for long, as tunnel vision may preclude you from embracing a different perspective.

If, however, you want to actually learn a few things instead of pontificating and providing arguments that simply demonstrate your (almost) complete lack of knowledge, then read on.

Take a look at https://distrowatch.com/ and on the right-hand side you will see one hundred of the GNU/Linux distributions' websites that are visited daily, perhaps with a view to download. There are hundreds more.

You'll see Mint at Number 2, and the Fedora you mentioned at Number 7.

Linux is the name of the kernel, not the OS, developed by Linus Torvalds.

The GNU element is not freeware, it is free and open source software (FOSS).

I could go on, and I hope you consider asking to learn more, or you could take a look at the following

https://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

and, from here (written 10 years ago)

https://www.linux.org/threads/what-is-linux.4106/unread

As I say, I hope you decide to expand your horizons.

If not, then this thread becomes

Booooooorrrrrrrriiiiinnnnnnnggggggg!

Guys.......why are we even bothering here? It's now apparent that this is a classic case of

"Do not feed the trolls".

He's a far more intelligent one than most, granted; poses it as a discussion point.....quite earnestly, really..! But, this:-

Postscript: The fact is I LOVE MS Office. I think it's a superb office suite, and I'd be paranoid about using my MS Office created files with something like Libre Office. And as for things like Wine, I'm sure there are several of my apps besides MS Office which at best will run quite bugly on it. So, I can't be bothered fooling with anything like that.

.....was a massive warning sign, and the biggest clue. Oh, how on EARTH did I miss it?

Says it all, doesn't it?

Welcome @jumponlinux to the Linux forum;
It looks like you want the freedom of Linux, with the control provided by Microsoft.
In order to use Linux, you have to graduate from the elementary {MS} level of computering, which is where most people are today. Linux was not intended for computer-illiterate people. Linux has never been about competing with MS or Apple or anything else for "market share".

I chuckled when I read your comments about MS Office being so good. I assume that you did not have to spend any time learning how to use 'Word' or 'Excel' or 'Publisher'.
Also, before trashing Libre Office you might take the time it takes to accustom yourself to the more logical usage of words used to name programs. (I was an MS guy from about 1993 until about 2015) I remember how difficult it was to understand that to write something you had to use 'Word'. Of course you had to use words, and lots of them.
With Libre Office or Open Office the program is named 'Writer'. Much easier to understand and remember.

As far as AI is concerned; whoever named it Artificial Intelligence knew what they were doing. The meaning of 'artificial' is 'fake', not real. When read properly it could be read - "Fake Intelligence", or 'not real'.

Nothing but the opinions of an Old Geezer, (pushing 90)
