Cheers
This is sort of a fun/learning project.
I have a NB1400A, its kinda a cheap tablet internals on a laptop case, no touchscreen just keyboard and mouse.
Runs Android 4.2 (I think?) on an ARM A9 according to the site.
I'd like to put a low resource distro of linux if possible.
If I'm successfull then I'll start on a stack of NB1016A's that I have laying around
If anyone has any ideas where to start I'd appreciate it

You may want to try porting postmarketOS (www.postmarketos.org). It's based on Alpine and aimed at replacing Android on all phones and tablets (and they're working on iPhones too!).

Try Porteus, look into antX for ARM (it's Debian and Debian has an ARM branch)

Does this replace the original OS or does it run inside it as a VM?

Put Porteus on a SD card and try it from there, first, I'd say.
This is assuming machine will boot from the card. I didnt see much on specs, but SD card was mentioned.
