trouble installing linux mint

I have a lenovo R60 laptop in great condition, and am finally switching over to linux from windows XP. Since the moonos site is having issues, I downloaded linux mint 17 and burned it to a dvd. When I hit F12 at startup, it brings up a menu allowing me to boot from the disk, but when I hit enter, I only get a countdown screen saying it'll automatic boot from the cd. When the count goes to zero, all activity stops, nor does anything resume if I just wait a long time. After browsing similar questions, I decided to shortcut all the possible problems by trying USB instead. I haven't been able to verify that the downloaded copy is "good", because I dont know how to open a terminal for the md5 sum checker, but I did correctly use Rufus to put it on USB, and again, I was able to select boot from USB with the exact same results as the DVD. What should I try next?

Angie,
You did burn it to the dvd as an ISO, Correct? If you just coppied it to the the dvd, it won't work.:)
