Hi, Semi-Experienced Newbie here,

I have an HP Desktop All-In_One from 2008. I have purged all Windows programs and am running Mint 19.3 Tricia. These are my stats from termbin.com/abst4u. Do I update Video Driver? Or Graphics? Do I simply need to install a new Graphics Card? The info on the net is super overwhelming and I will be installing a Kingston A400 120GB SSD Drive. Obviously HP will not update any drivers as warranty time is long gone. I hate to download drivers off the internet but found a seemingly legit website (which I will do some research on) Sciologness (yep, that is how it is spelled) that lists all driver updates for my comp model. I just need to know which one to use, and or, if I simply need to buy and install a new graphics card. And how do I research which one? I have just started tinkering with Hardware. So much to learn, so many minefields.

Thanks for your help. I just need to keep it simple. I have installed new RAM and have the confidence to use the Terminal also. These are my stats:

f1) Have you updated and upgraded?
Code:
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
2) Have you installed codecs?
Code:
sudo apt install mint-meta-codecs
3) Have you tried the driver manager?

Thanks Aerochester for your suggestions. These are the results:

1) "All packages are up to date."
- I check for updates every time I turn on the computer.
2) 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 24 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
- I auto removed a bunch of stuff.

"mint-meta-codecs is already the newest version (2019.12.28)" and, yes I have used the Driver Manager occasionally, including yesterday, and was not prompted to install or upgrade anything.

So my original question in short form is do I upgrade & install a new graphics card, update driver off some strangers website, and or both. I checked out the site I posted above and there are no red flags in scam check websites.

I was just on a video conference and had to reset the 'Settings' from Auto to 240p just to have the audio and video sync. It hasn't always been this way. It has only started stuttering in the last 6?? months. Web pages take full 8 seconds to load. I have tons of RAM - I installed the max recently and that did not help. I am just not that much of a techie to understand what exactly to do. I'm sure it's not complicated, I am simply a tad cash poor and a real stubborn old broad and if I don't have to buy a new computer, then I will eat well. So I am presuming it is a hardware issue with the graphics card. I simply wanted those that know to chime in. As I asked above, card, update driver or both?

Thanks so much.

1. Do you use Timeshift ?.....gives you a "system restore point" in case things head south

2. How long has this happened ?...can you pinpoint some change/update that the stuttering coincided with ?

3. How long has kernel 5.4 been installed ?

I just checked that site and there aren't any Linux drivers there, only Windows. Is compositing enebled? You could try another distro too and see if the problem persists. Download another distro you might want to try, burn it to a USB and try in live mode. I wonder whether muffin uses opengl or xrender ... I've noticed windows' managers like xfwm from XFCE4 uses xrendr as a backend while others like kwin can use both; opegl and xrendr and IMHO it seems kwin does a better job than xfwm when it comes to compositing and video play back. @6maureen52 may I suggest you to try a distro which uses KDE as its desktop environment? I've been using this one https://www.q4os.org/index.html it's works pretty well on this machine which specs are quite similar to those of yours

and haven't noticed any stuttering. But I used to use xfce4 on this same laptop and I do remember there was some stuttering. Of course, upgrading hardware is a great option too and possibly a better one, so if you can, do that.

Thanks for your reply & questions. I have become overwhelmed with so much info that I'm a bit overwhelmed and the one thing I should always see is that the driver update I found was for MS. Cripes! That would have blown a gasket. Okay...

1) Yes. Used it yesterday manually. I have it set for 2x daily.
2) As far as I can rekon, 8 months? 6-8 months. I switched out Ubuntu 18.04 for Linux Mint when the long lags became 'the new normal.' The stuttering and endless loading of web pages has persisted.
3) I don't know how long kernel 5.4 has been installed. How can I find out?

FYI: Whenever there are sys updates I install them. So whatever Linux has dished out, I have installed. Even Firefox updates which I no longer use as it has become too cumbersome. I use Brave for a variety of reasons.

And, thanks for your help.
Maureen

Thanks for the heads up on that MS info. Sheesh, I shoulda known. Thanks again. That would have been a disaster I don't need. I always keep a copy of my Linux install around just in case, but I'd rather not have to use it.

As for the rest of your post I didn't understand most of it but - and correct me if I missed the point - I could download and try XFCE4 w/ kde as it is the lightest distro.

May I ask why I should download it from https://www.q4os.org/index.html. I am not familiar. I always use the "official"(?) Linux site.

Also I could just get a new graphics card. I can do that. Do I just DuckDuckGo "hp compatible graphics cards?"

I feel much better that you use Timeshift...seeing thta I am going to suggest you change kernel

You may or may not have Mainline installed.

HERE will give you a deb file to install

When installed, open it....click on kernel 4.15....then click install

Timeshift will save you if something goes astray

This should not cause any dramas......it may fix the dramas you already have......fingers crossed

Nothing lost if it doesn't work.

Dear Condobloke,

Took your suggestion, after install (I have seen a lot of your posts and conversations so I trusted you. I wouldn't normally just take any suggestions from a stranger... and it was github)

Anyhow, message reads: "Same Version Is Already Installed." Looks like I'm going to have to trust one of those condescending and sometimes dismissive children at the computer store and pony up for a graphics card. No worries. I'll do my research first.

So it is saying that mainline is already installed.....?

Click on Menu.......the type in mainline.......then click on that result

mainline will open and spend a minute or two arranging itself....dont interrupt it....

Then scroll down to kernel 4.15 ....click on it to highlight it.....then click on install........wait for it to finish....do not interrupt it.

Dear Condobloke,

Okay, I have been confused w/Linux about downloading and installing being two separate functions. LOL? MS Win hangovers are harsh.

So, installed properly by clicking on "Reinstall Package." & 402/402 were refreshed. The "Mainline Kernel Installer" box has kernels 5.0 to 5.7.1 to, Refresh, Install, Purge, etc. The list does not go below 5.0

It shows I have kernels 5.0.0.32.34, 5.3.0.62.56, 5.4.0.42.46 installed. Is that the problem?

Cheers,
Maureen

Click on refresh.....should be in column on right hand side of mainline’s window....There are definitely more than that......after ‘refresh’ has done its thing, scroll down ....

I'm getting tired and will do more research on your suggestion in the a.m. For now let me show you the All In One products 15.9 supports per the site info:
AMD All-In-One Desktop Product Family Compatibility
AMD Radeon™ HD 7600A SeriesAMD Radeon™ HD 6600A Series
AMD Radeon™ HD 7450A SeriesAMD Radeon™ HD 6350A Series

I have a 7310. The Desktop Prod. Fam. Compatibility says it supports the 7300 series. Does that mean 7310's also?
And another hiccup is that prod page says it supports up to
  • Linux kernel 2.6 or above (up to 3.19) I'm getting fuzzy head and need to let it go for another seep.

It did refresh 402/402. Then I went to youtube.com and 20 seconds later the page loaded. I gotta sleep on this. I refresh well and do a pretty decent reset.

G'day @6maureen52 from another Aussie, and welcome. :)

Gotta sign off for my night now, but here's a list of the kernels that support Maureen's Radeon driver

found in Linux kernels: 2.6.27–2.6.39, 3.0–3.19, 4.0–4.20, 5.0–5.8, 5.9-rc+HEAD

... so I am not sure that we need to modify kernels at all.

Back tomorrow with more

Cheers

Also I could just get a new graphics card. I can do that. Do I just DuckDuckGo "hp compatible graphics cards?"

Like I said before, man if you can do that, just go for it. Doing so will give you some extra benefits; if you get one of those supported by the new amdgpu driver:
AMD Radeon™ RX 5700/5600/5500 Series GraphicsAMD Radeon™ Pro WX-series
AMD Radeon™ VII Series GraphicsAMD Radeon™ Pro WX 9100
AMD Radeon™ RX Vega Series GraphicsAMD Radeon™ Pro WX 8200
AMD Radeon™ Vega Frontier EditionAMD FirePro™ W9100
AMD Radeon™ RX 550/560/570/580/590 Series GraphicsAMD FirePro™ W8100
AMD Radeon™ RX 460/470/480 GraphicsAMD FirePro™ W7100
AMD Radeon™ Pro DuoAMD FirePro™ W5100
AMD Radeon™ R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano GraphicsAMD FirePro™ W4300
AMD Radeon™ R9 380/380X/390/390X Graphics
AMD Radeon™ R9 285/290/290X Graphics
AMD Radeon™ R9 360 Graphics

any of those above will do, check them online and see which one suits you both better: you - your pocket - and your machine. New driver offers a ton of new features and several improvements. So, if you are able to buy a new GPU, I suggest you get one of those above, download new driver from here https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-amdgpu-unified-linux-20-20 comeback if you need help on installing them and after you've sucessfully done it, tell us all everything about it.

That's the official q4os' site. XFCE4 and KDE are both Desktop environments; they are tools OSs use to interact with users, for instance, Mint uses amongst others the one you're using; cinnamon. Read here if you wanna know more https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Desktop_environment

These are not compatible with current xorg's version, in fact, a few versions back. I already checked them a while ago since I too have an AMD GPU. https://drivers.amd.com/relnotes/am...staller-notes-for-linux-operating-systems.pdf

Thanks everyone, I've done a lot of reading/research today on your suggestions. I'm going outside!
Copied the kernels that support my Radeon driver. Have changed Mainline settings to go backwards from 5.0 and it looks like I have gone from 422 to over 3000.
