What is a "P" plate?

It's a Provisional Licence plate (separate to the vehicle licence plates) for drivers new to driving

P plates in my home state of Queensland (abbrev. Qld) are of two types P1 and P2 (used to be only the one in my day).

Easiest for explanation is to read the following 2 links covering P1 and P2, and to see examples, just type in, say in Google

In other states and territories in Australia, YMMV.

In Qld, you can get a Learner's Permit at 16 (must be accompanied by a qualified driver), your licence at 17 (pass driver's test), and so on.

If you are 23 when you get your P1, then you have it for a year and go straight to Open Licence, no need for P2.

Cheers

Chris

BTW if you lose your licence (exceeding demerit points, drink driving and so on) it's back to P's following any disqualification period served.

A P plater can drive as fast as they like and break every road rule...so they think.
