AnitaOS - A DIY Distro - You build it yourself

This Distro is ideal for those with really old legacy hardware but find some of the other distros like Damn Small Linux etc maybe not be suitable and want something a little more upto date. What if you'd had the basic ISO and add want you needed and updates you needed and could run a modern browser like Seamonkey with a 2.6.25.16 kernel. In other words a get your hands dirty and build your own system. I have now made the iso's with a lot of the updates installed to make building the your system easier but still giving you the choices over how you want to deploy your DIY system. Choosing which programs you wish to install of course older programs designed for really slow processors available from petget package manager. These ISO's also have QT, and Full SDL Libraries for games.

Runs with really low ram requirements and is sleek and fast and can make it your own with the tools provided well just visit go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/anitaos/files/Anitaos/LATEST LTS ANITAOS ISO/ and download the iso, burn the iso, read the documentation and away you go. Boot up into Anitaos from your newly created CD which you have burned.
Partition your drive and install then install grub bootloader download what you need and your away..... some if not all will require Glibc updates this distro is loosely and based on Puppy Linux - So have fun.

For Extra Software go here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/anitaos/files/Anitaos/ - You will see that the software is in different catergories in folders such as multimedia, graphics etc.

If You need to restart jwm from commandline in terminal type jwm -restart and to fix menus type fixmenus

Having accessed the site as mentioned earlier, download and burn the base 4.12 iso to disk. Install using gparted and mount the cdrom then install using the universal installer.

Install the Grub bootloader.

The base updates required for an updated anitaos are now installed in the iso - the Wiki has more info.

For programs that install that don't create a menu entry use the program menu entry maker to make a menu entry. t. This is especially true of some of the games which install to either /usr/games/ or /usr/bin.

For really old low resource machines it is recommended to use Firedog instead of Seamonkey for general browsing. There are also in the internet section other choices as well for low ram machines.

Also worthy of installing is deb2pet which allows you to convert debian packages to anitaos's .pet format to install simply download .deb package - best to use squeeze packages and install. As always if you have any problems logging in or need help then leave questions here thank you.

Thank you for the info but this kernel works well on my legacy hardware and for others with old stuff but again thank you for your posting.
 
I see where you're coming from, but be aware that 2.6.25 may have a lot of known vulnerabilities.

I can't remember rightly but what you want to avoid is the intel kernel mode video driver migration from the i810 to the i915 and all of the KMS related "fun" which came with it. I have a feeling that this first appeared in 2.6.33 but it may be worth researching. You could also just build 2.6.32 and see how it runs. Anyway good luck with your distro.

Many many people around the world use this kernel in Puppy Linux with their legacy hardware which is the base for this DIY os is based on including myself and their have been no reports of hacking or malware attacks. Not only that it is a Puppy Linux Kernel not a normal vanilla kernel.

I have run on many machines and have had no problems, this a better alternative to the 2.4 kernel based legacy os's out there

Ah it probably has some backported security/bug fixes - it's all good then.
 
Latest news with XPDF have uploaded the libs needed for this to run copy to /usr/lib.

Quite often when compiling from Debian libs will end up in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu. Please be aware of this when compiling from debian and that you often need to use menu entry maker to make a menu entry or correct menu entry.
 
Latest update Cinepaint is removed as it was not proving to compile very well so either use fotoxx or xpaint - the latest mpaint is also a good option as this project will start to follow my Bonsai philosophy of simplicity.

Added older version of fotoxx which requires less libs to run.

Posted new Seamonkey package version 2.21 or update present installed one. New package installs to opt.

I would like to suggest you make a thread in http://www.linux.org/categories/popular-distributions.29/ (like you have already done with this thread) where you inform people on how they can contribute to AnitaOS whether that be porting software, betatesting, offering suggestions, etc. I think you should also talk to the owner of this forum (username: Rob) about getting AnitaOS its own category in http://www.linux.org/categories/popular-distributions.29/.

By the way, I am a graphics designer and I would love to contribute to the wallpapers and icons for AnitaOS. If you start a thread about how people can contribute to AnitaOS, could you include information about how graphic designers can contribute? Thanks.
 
Thank you Devyn I will contact Rob and your offer on wallpapers etc would be cool I am thinking about Anitaos being very open it is not just mine but like true open source it is what you make it.
