Hi there, new to forums. I've posted twice (same issue) but my posts keep disappearing. Is there something wrong?

Welcome, I am not a Janitor for this site, but I can tel you that we do have automatic filtering of new post, if you make a first post that includes links to outside sites, it will be automatically held until one of the Mods have time to check it.

So without using off site links, what is your problem?

My problem is that I am getting horrible screen tearing mostly in my browser. I just installed Crowz (Devuan) 5 with the Mate desktop. I used to have instructions on how to fix it, and it always worked, but I'm thinking they are outdated. First, here are the instructions:

Code:
If experiencing screen tearing (mostly in browser) do this:

First make sure that "Enable software compositing . . ." in Control Center >> Windows, General tab, is not checked. Then, in /home/**/.config open compton.conf and change:

backend = "xrender";
#backend = "glx";

-to-

#backend = "xrender";
backend = "glx";

Then in Startup Applications, click Add, and fill in this:

Name:        Compton
Command:    compton -b
Comment:    Compositor

To fixe fade in (to have no fade in) find the line: fading = true -change to- fading = false

The reason I think the instructions are out of date is that in my new install, I have no lines in the compton.config file that has the lines I was told to change. Can you help me?

Not my area of expertise, however Tearing seems to be mostly associated with xorg and AMD radon graphics
so my first question is can you install inxi [from the software manager] and run from a terminal inxi -G and copy/paste back the results [it may not help me, but it might have other members]

Here it is:

Code:

From your link:

I do have firmware-misc-nonfree installed, so that's not it.
Also, I tried the "20-intel.conf" fix, but that caused my computer not to boot. Actually, I guess it did boot, but not to Mate; it booted to something like a terminal prompt. I had to live boot and erase the contents of the file to get it back to booting normally.

Thanks, though. Any other ideas?

not off the top of my head, hang tight other members may pop in later [we are all in different time zones]

Thanks for your help so far. I wonder about the lines I was told to change, from "xrender" to "glx." I wish I knew what that meant. For the record, I did do the last half of those instructions, putting compton in the startup applications. Also here is a more full inxi report:

What is your monitor frequency and resolution? What kind of cable are you using?
Have you changed your monitor or cable lately?

Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Refresh rate: 60 Hz

Not sure what you mean by frequency. The cable is the old style, sorry can't remember what it's called. Nothing has changed except for upgrading from Devuan 4 to 5. FTR, this is not unusual on my system. It's just that something has changed (see above) and now I don't know how to fix the problem.

I see a package in Synaptic called "xserver-xorg-video-intel." It says it is an Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver, and it's not installed. I wonder if this would help or not?

Well, after trying something that should have been obvious, it seems to have resolved itself. I had a copy of the old compton.config file, with the changed lines, so I put it where the instructions said it was supposed to be, and "made-believed" the other compton.config file in a different place didn't exist. It seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks to everyone who posted here.
