Linux on mobile

Hello, I have not used linux much and this is my first post. I know there are linux distros that will run on android. I am curious can linux be succesfully put on a generic phone, such as a pay as you go flip phone?

My reason for wondering is I have some old cell phones that are just collecting dust. I figured it would be an interesting project. The speed of the older phones seems like it would make putting linux on an old phone... useless. Can anyone give me some insight? Thank you.

You will probably have to build it yourself...and then find a way to flash the device. Google the phone make and model with Linux and see what you find. And take a look at the PengPod, I think you might be interested. There is also some articles on their wiki about building images for ARM devices that might help.

I've done this before on a spare android phone I had laying around. The phone had to be rooted first then it had to support loop devices. I was successfully able to install ubuntu on it. Tried arch but was never successful.

As for Now there are few Linux destros are available for mobiles like Ubuntu, Android (cyanogenmod,MIUI),meemo but all of them works only with arm devices or the devices that have got atleast 600Mhz processor. you can try with Cynogenmod, if your device is compatible with linux you can use it and after that You can explore more of it
