Need Correct Wireless Adapter for Ubuntu

I have purchased a D Link wireless adaptor from Fry's. The customer rep researched Linux compatibility online before the purchase. The drives do not download after inserting the cd . Now a Fry's computer tech says it probably isn't compatible, and they have no idea which one (Wireless Adapter) will work. Reaching out the community forum for recommending a sure fire adapter so the internet can be available .
Thanks! anandsai

Good luck. I also have a nice used Emachine that runs well except my ethernet port is dead. Either I'll wind up putting in a LAN card or hunting for a compatible USB Wifi dongle.

EDIT: There are also Ethernet to USB adapters, but they may be hit and miss like the Wireless adapter.

As far as adapters go, alfa is one of the best, IMHO

Caveat emptor!

As you found out -- stay away from D-link (and Cisco, I suggest, for security reasons) for linux!
