Over the last few years I used Google Drive to store all of my reference photos on.

In the past I'd go there and download what I needed. Then I was off to the races.
This worked well for a number of years.

Yesterday, I went to Google Drive and all of my reference photos were gone!
By gone I mean wiped from existence:-:(o_O

It appears that Google Drive isn't a trustworthy place for storage now.

Thankfully I did manage to place some of those photos on my external Toshibia.

Did you exceed the storage limit ?

Is the contact email address for your google drive account current/up to date ?

No, I didn't exceed the storage limit. I only had 3 Gigs on there out of the 15 GB's that they offered me.
Yeah, that email is up-to-date.

A few months ago I purchased a external 1 TB Toshibia HDD.
The 500 GB external Toshibia I've had for years has most of the photo's on it.

Super pissed that those photo's are gone!

Any ideas why that happened?

@KGIII,
Has this happened to you? (provided you use Google Drive)

Can this happen on a server that I could set up for myself?

Nope.

I do store one Linux-Tips daily snapshot on Google Drive but that's it. (I have multiple daily snapshots available to me because I demand redundancy. I insist upon it for anything that I consider valuable.)

  1. Check the system requirements and supported browsers to make sure you're using a supported browser and operating system.
Drive can be used with the 2 most recent versions of all major browsers.
  2. Make sure cookies and JavaScript® are turned on for your browser.
  3. We recommend using Chrome for Drive. But you can try opening Drive in another browser, such as Mozilla® Firefox®, Microsoft® Internet Explorer®, or Apple® Safari®.

Using firefox?...check enhanced tracking protection

I found out from the info you posted for me Condobloke, that under Linux "Drive" isn't available and would have to be used on the web.

They didn't make that clear when I added photos years ago.

Anyway, I accessed Google Drive via the web and a handful of my photos were there.
Downloaded them immediately to my Debian system.

I'll back up tomorrow, it's late. Thanks for the help!

When's the right time to make a backup? .... "now" ;)

I'm glad you were able to access your photos. The whole Idea of "stuff safely stored in the cloud" just disappearing was a bit unsettling, even when it wasn't my stuff.

Thanks.
Backup complete.

I've had things disappear from photos. I think they delete them after a certain period of time. I keep pics backed up on an external drive.

IMO they really have no right to just delete photo's or emails when they wish.
