Hello people,

In Ubuntu 2018 with gnome flashback there was
a nice feature "resize icon" : I can choose
the size of each icon individually.

I have just installed
Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)
and in gnome flashback
I can not do this anymore.

Any help? Is there another session manager
(xfce, kde or anything else ) that has this feature ?

Thanks
Stef

Hi,
Do you have gnome-tweaks tool installed?
If not,
Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome-tweaks
Then check whether you can implement what you want.

Hi
Thanks for the hint.
I installed gnome-tweaks, but this does not help.
Actually I can not even move an icon on the desktop - the icons stay ranged in columns

Right click on the desktop and have a look at the options there

did you reboot after installing gnome tweaks?

Yes I did reboot )

There are "desktop settings" - probably you mean this. It is possible to change the size of all icons simultaneously
That is not what I want - I would like to chang the size or each icon individually so that the ones which are important now be bigger on the Desktop. This is possible in Ubuntu 2018 - and I can not recover this feature in Ubu 22

They are known as DEs (Desktop Environments), not session managers.

Cinnamon has the option available, provided you are prepared to tweak it some.

In MATE, it is inbuilt, and you can right-click the icon to resize it.

Be aware that, that if you install another DE on your current install, DO NOT REMOVE the existing DE, it will break your install's desktop. Instead, the alternate DE/DEs should be available at your Login screen.

Also, you can read my comments here, on Cinnamon

Dear Wizard,

Thank you very much for the hint! I was seeking for a solution since several months now that’s it! MATE has indeed the “resize icon “ option and all goes great
(at least for the moment).

I did not quite succeed with cinnamon but for the moment no need for it
since MATE is here

Thanks again!

Best wishes

Stef

Ubuntu 22.04 defaults to GNOME desktop 42 and uses an extension called “Desktop Icons NG” (DING in short) to handle shortcut icons on desktop. It provides 4 icon sizes (“Tiny”, “Small”, “Normal”, and “Large”) in ‘Appearance

You are welcome @stefan300 :)

If you wish to accomplish the same sort of thing with Cinnamon some time, have a read through my article here

Dear Wizardfromoz

Once again I would be happy if you could help me.
Following your advice I have installed
MATE (June 23) and I was very happy with it
until recently. The basic reason why I prefer it to XFCE for example
is that I can now resize icons each one its own size.

But several days ago my desktop
slowed down considerably without any visible reason.
When I click on the icon of a folder it takes about 5 - 8 seconds
to open. First it opens an empty window then it it
is filled by the icons of files from the folder.
When I want to create a new document it takes about 3 seconds.

Before it worked just instantly.

I made several experiences, here is the result:
with XFCE: no problem
with Thunar file manager: no problem
with Nautilus file manager: no problem

However all the three options do not allow to resize
the icons, for the moment only (MATE+caja file manager) do this job.

Would it be possible to keep the "resize icons" option
and accelerate caja?

I will be grateful for any help.

I am using UBUNTU 22.04.3 LTS
on the AMD-Ryze 9 3950X 16-core processor
with RAM 64 gig and the motherboard AORUS Elite X570.

Thanks

Best regards

Stef
