this is not built into my linux (nor is it listed in "software manager" to install), i'm guessing there are a bunch of other built-in programs that do the same thing....can someone plz provide a few program names to try

thx

Smartmontools (in software manager)
The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. It is derived from the smartsuite package, and includes support for ATA/ATAPI-5 disks. It should run on any modern Linux system.

Gsmartcontrol (in Software Manager)....probably the more popular of the two
GSmartControl is a graphical user interface for smartctl, which is a tool for querying and controlling SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data on modern hard disk drives. It allows you to inspect the drive's SMART data to determine its health, as well as run various tests on it.

Features:

* automatically reports and highlights any anomalies;

* allows enabling/disabling Automatic Offline Data Collection;

* allows enabling/disabling SMART itself;

* supports configuration of global and per-drive options for smartctl;

* performs SMART self-tests;

* displays drive IDs, capabilities, attributes, and self-test/error logs;

* can read in smartctl data from a saved file, interpreting it as a read-only

virtual device.

hi c and j

i fell your trap of trying to get me to do stuff on terminal

so in terminal i type in smartd and nothing happens.

so then i type smartctl and stuff happens

why doesn't stuff happen when i type in smartd

why doesn't linux do stuff when i want it to?

Why don't you stop whinging when we ask you to and supply us with needed information when we ask you ?

It means it's time to replace your HDD/SDD. It's probably not failing immediately, but backup your data and be prepared to replace the drive. I'd replace it before it failed, or at least have a spare on hand for when it does fail.
