I did sudo apt update and it gave me this.

W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian stable InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8DD48989F43719CA
W: Failed to fetch https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian/dists/stable/InRelease The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8DD48989F43719CA
W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I tried installing protonvpn with a deb file in the past before I bought IVPN. I removed the directory with "rm -r" now it always gives me this message. I dont need anything that has to do with proton on my laptop.
How do I get rid of this??? https:// repo.protonvpn.com isn't even inside of my /etc.apt/sources.list.
the only thing that in there are normal deb links.

If you have inxi you can do
Code:
inxi -r
it will list all of the repos in your sources.lists

The list should be called /etc/apt/sources.list.d/protonvpn-stable.list
Code:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/protonvpn-stable.list

Should take care of it.

Which Distro are you using?

you do not say which distro you are using, so this is generic

open the update manage
go edit
software sorces
additional repositories
find and delete proton
