Solved Whoa! ThinkPad arrived today! My Potential Linux Desktop....

Well, the ordered ThinkPad for Linux was delivered today.

As expected, the Windows is German.

I understand there's a way to change it to English, but it seems only by going online.

So I wonder if anyone has experience changing the language?

I had wanted to avoid creating an online account.

But perhaps that is irrelevant if I do eventually a full Linux install.

Does a full Linux install remove the Windows entirely?

Any helpful suggestions?

A Linux install will remove Windows if that is what you select. otherwise it will install beside Windows and set up a dual boot.

If you have to change the system language on Windows 11, you can do so without reinstalling.

I was given to understand by a Linux user outside the forum that dual boot can be a security risk. Can I have some other opinions and thoughts on it here?

IMO. not so, with multi boot, the only operating system connected to the net is the one you choose, so if you have LMDE6 and W10 on the same machine, if you log into windows, only windows will be connected, likewise if you log into LMDE6 then only LMDE6 will connect, as windows cannot normally access Linux files and folders, i do not see a problem, Linux can access Windows files and folders but not the OS, However if you have LMDE6 in a VM on a Windows machine you do run a slight risk [but only slight]

Okay, and I don't expect highly sensitive data anyway. Should install firewall though? First have to figure booting from USB and it's a puzzle. Seemed I installed etcher setup but can't find it.

Every time it seems to install it brings up balena etcher with choices flash from file, or url or clone drive.

I choose file, but no file is found.

Should install firewall though?

YES depending on your distribution most come with a preinstalled firewall, you just need to find it and activate it, once you have everything installed and running as you want, install and run Timeshift [or similar] back up

so mint 21.3, to find the firewall and timeshift, click on LM menu in search box type firewall click on firewall configuration and set it up, for timeshift do the same [but put timeshift in the search.]

Can anyone give me simple steps to use the flash drive with Virginia on it, to test that Linux version?

Do I understand, I need to determine how my box opens bios, then select the usb?

not sure about mint, but in ubuntu it works like this:

• download normal iso
• "flash" that iso onto a usb stick
• boot

It will directly boot into a live system from which you can also install ubuntu. as mint is based on ubuntu, i'm pretty sure its the same thing there.

That is what I thought, that just by having the boot USB in the port, when the ThinkPad reboots it should look to the stick and reboot from there. But it doesn't.... so far.

Only if the BIOS is set for USB First boot, if not. as you switch on the machine keep tickling F12 this should open the one time boot menu [see my how to.. the instructions are all there if you read and if necessary follow the links]
