Old Macbook Drivers for Debian Elsie 5

Hello. I'm new to Linux and was finally able to get Debian installed on an old Macbook Pro 15" 2011. I received it used and had the motherboard switched out because of the failing gpu. I also have a new hard disc installed. It never booted up OS at all but I was able to get Linux installed. On boot, though, I have to add "nomodeset=0 and the graphics are not good. I assume I'm missing a critical driver somewhere but have no idea how to install it, or even understand the system settings which I'm posting below. Any input or help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Looks like you have an amd graphics card with the ati driver loaded. That suggests the system would be helped by the amd firmware. Have a look here to see how to install it with other recommendations too:

In brief, you could install the package: firmware-amd-graphics, if it's not installed, but the link shows more helpful packages as well.

I did install the recommended firmware and graphics but it came back as everything being up to date and nothing new installed. I did find in the synaptic package manager that there is a package in kernel and models (non free) firmware for Samsung. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but my hard drive is Samsung. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Two aspects come to mind: is the package: firmware-misc-nonfree installed? It has some intel firmware which may help, and there's no harm installing if it's not already installed.

The other aspect is to consider upgrading from bullseye to bookworm. The advantage of doing so is to get the latest software available for the debian stable release. Here is a succinct description which works:
You would need to be able to use a text editor to alter the sources.list, so that's an important skill to learn if not known already.

It includes a lot of info that won't be necessary in ordinary cases. The briefer info at the first link is fine.

Don't forget things will not improve as long that this parameter is used during boot.
Install firmware-misc-nonfree and reboot without specifying "nomodeset=0" and see what happens...

On my system the sentence in bold above reads as: driver: X: loaded: modesetting alternate: fbdev,vesa dri: i965 gpu: i915 display-ID: :0

Hello and thank you for your response. firmware-misc-nonfree is already updated to the latest version. On boot without nomodset, the computer stalls at loading initial RAM disk.

If i boot in recovery mode, it stalls at :
[2.568917] fb0: switching to radeondrmfb from EFI VGA
[2.568925] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0 detected 2 ports

The only way it fully boots is with nomodeset=0.

Any ideas?
 
Hello again. I thought I would update you with my current attempts. Since this is just a test/practice computer, I installed Bookworm after trying a few other recommendations which didn't work. After installing, I only had ethernet but remedied it with the installer recommended for the broadcom wifi adapter. Surprisingly that actually worked so I am up and functional. However, once again I have to boot into nomodeset=0 for the boot to complete beyond initalize RAM. The graphics are better with bookworm but still not quite there. I have installed through the synaptic package manager the firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree and firmware-misc-nonfree. I also don't know with this distro how to provide any additional information you might need that would be helpful.

According to the output on graphics in post #4 there's an intel graphics card and an amd card. The amd card has the the ati driver, but the output doesn't show any driver for the intel card.

The firmware is covered by the installed firmware packages mentioned in post #9, except for the amd card which benefits from the package: firmware-amd-graphics. That should be installed if it's not already installed.

The intel driver for Xorg is supplied in the package: xserver-xorg-video-intel. You can check whether that package is installed with:

If it's not installed, install it and restart the X server or reboot to see if there's a difference. Remove the nomodeset parameter for testing.

Another useful command to show which drivers are installed for the video cards is:

It's clear from the output what the driver is, in this case it's nouveau for an nvidia card. If such information is not in the output, that's an indication of the absence of the required driver.

The i915 driver is not being used by the kernel in your machine. If the nomodeset kernel option is still present, the kernel won't use the i915 driver, so in case you haven't removed that, you ought to do that and reboot.

The output on your machine is also showing that the amd drivers are also not "in use".

You could try and generate new initramfs files since the computer was stalling at this point as mentioned in post #8 by running as root:

update-initramfs -u -k all
and then try to boot without the nomodeset.
