Interested to hear from anyone who has updated to LM21....either via the Update Manager, or via a Fresh Install?

have you updated to Linux Mint 21 ?

What was your previous version?

How did you update?...using the Update Manager?...or did you carry out a Fresh Install ?........Why ?

Any pros?...or cons?
 


for anyone hwo has upgraded......leave the following kernel update alone for the time being....it produces an error when installed.
Wait for the 'fix'....it will likely come along shortly

Last night I took a Clone Image of LM20.3 with Disks (included in most Linux Mint OS's by default)

I then used the new Update Manager....jumped through the hoops etc etc...followed the steps without causing any undue drama...basically I agreed with what it desired to do and elected to "Fix" whatever it wants to fix.
Everything I allowed iot to fix was simple stuff I could always reinstall later if the a particular situation demanded it.

it didnt seem to take too long...probably an hour to an hour and a half. As soon as it rebooted I took a quicj look and everything appeared to at least work...in other words it was responsive. (went to bed for 4am start today)

When I powered back up it showed an updatem for the kernel.......which promptly returned an error when installed !!

I removed that particular kernel, and then right clicked on it when it was re offerred in update manager and chose to ignore future offerings for that particular update only.

Not a good start.

I am also noticing some weirdness in other areas. My vpn is not working despite a fresh install of the client. This could be due to something on the vpn's side, but I am thinking it is just too much coincidence. An email from airvpn later in my day will shed more light.

I also note some hesitation on the Software Manager.

I will give it a few more days.

Unless required, I always give OS upgrades a few days before jumping on them.

I use a LTS distro only. The reason for that is I prize stability, otherwise I'd use something else.

So, I'm still getting updates. I'll upgrade after a month or so. If it were Lubuntu, I'd upgrade immediately. I'm kinda obligated to test that, so I would. I have just one Mint install, so it'll get upgraded to a new version when I get to it. I'd guess that'll be early next month. I'll probably still read some reports before pushing the buttons.

I have had a "feeling" re mint 21.......and last nights and this mornings experience did nought to do away with that 'feeling'

LTS distro is a must. All others are rubbish

UPDATE:
I removed this kernel update from blacklist....moving it back to the front page of Update Manager
I refreshed a few times over the space of a couple of hours.......and clicked on "changelog".....this time there IS a changelog whereas before there was not. This changelog showed Medium Urgency

I installed, and it installed with no hesitation and did not require a reboot.

Yeah, I'll give it a few days. If I had to guess, it'd be early next month when I upgrade. By then, the bugs will be worked out. Hiopefully...

Started with the mintupdate installer, it took 14 mins @35mbs to download everything, then another 1hr 50 mins to complete the installation [including the kernel upgrade to 5.15.o-46.49]
The first reboot was a little slow, but everything so far seems to be working without issue. If i spot any problems, I will report back

Update, been using it all afternoon, no glitches, I can't be bothered going through all the changes that mint have made, but my sound and graphics have definitely improved

Not necessarily PCLinuxOS is rock solid.

I've had PCLinuxOS work OOTB on computers where Linux Mint and Ubuntu distros would not even install without a big hassle.

I agree LTS versions for the most are the way to go however just because a Linux distro isn't an LTS version doesn't make it rubbish.

Several otther non-LTS distros also just used PCLinuxOS as an example.

I just selected an epub format novel to read.....and attempted to open it with ebook viewer....only to find it has disappeared from my pc.

Since I carried oput the steps in post#16 (see below) the Software Repository via Software Manager appears to have "righted itself"....in other words the reactions/answers etc that are coming from it are familiar and reliable

For a good ebook reader, install Calibre.( in the Software Managewr..it comes with a brilliant ebook reader and will convert any format to any other format....for example if you have a book in pdf format or whatever ...it can be converted to epub or mobi, or whatever, in a few minutes

Calibre....is the answer. Take a little time to play with it....it is quite brilliant.

just finished updating my mint drive for the 2010 Dell insperon [ dual core model: Pentium T4500,]
it took just over 4 hrs, only one minor problem .. sudo apt remove mintupdate && reboot, did not work once the update had finished, had to do a re-boot from the mint menu, then run it again to get the uninstal to work.
everything else is fine

I will now reboot and see what effect that has had....if any.

I mentioned above to be sure you have a BACKUP

I have a Timeshift Snapshot taken earlier this morning if necessary. This will only take me back to a system which I believe is flawed.

I also have a full Disk Clone of LM 20.3 on an external hard drive.

If the system is still screwed up, I will go back to 20.3 and wait a month or so for Clem and Co. to get their acts together.

I also use Calibre....for editing epub material and converting various formats to epub etc etc

WHen trying to open a book in Calibre, I receive the following error:

A rollback to LM 20.3 is looking better and better.

I went from 20.2 Cinnamon to 21 XFCE (fresh install, as I've heard that's the best way to do it) so I can improve the speed of my laptop, but it being an older laptop would explain why I don't see a massive improvement. While I'm not stubborn to change, I actually prefer Cinnamon instead. For starters, Cinnamon gives you more options for the theme, so I can't rice it the way that works best for me. Another annoyance is I can't delete programs from the start menu like I could in Cinnamon (I have to do so from the Software Manager instead). I don't know if this feature wasn't included, or if I'm not looking in the right spot, but I'd prefer having my programs appear as icons in the taskbar to make it look less cluttered. Because of those reasons (and others I'll eventually come across), I'm going to check out the MATE version instead. Yes, it takes up a little more CPU, but I'm willing to accept that trade-off. I'm also considering replacing my desktop environment with a window manager if I end up not liking MATE as well.

Update: I should make it clear that I'm only switching to another desktop environment so I can test out my new distro in a VM more smoothly. After I finally find a distro that works for me, I'm officially ditching Mint completely.

I note that each time I reboot/install an update...the new process monitor shows down in the system tray and tells me there is a timeshift snapshot being made.

Upon opening Timeshift there is no sign of any snapshot being made or having already been made.

However, if I click on the hamburger menu in the top right hand corner of the Timehsift window and open View Timeshift Logs.......there are log files for the time specified.

So, A little process monitor was added to Linux Mint to detect automated updates and automated system snapshots running in the background.....is true and it works.

EDIT: Timeshift users should be aware, that the activity from the process Monitor down in the system tray DOES NOT indicate that a snapshot of your system is being made. It is merely a log hwich summarises your settings etc.

For a SNAPSHOT to be made you must STILL either take one On Demand (started manually by you) or set the scheduler to take one or more automatically at predefined intervals (eg daily, weekly monthly etc)
